The Dharma in a New Era
An Interview with Steve Jobs
Recorded on October 1, 2018
This is a record of an interview with Steve Jobs, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his insights into the modern era and the practice of the Buddha’s teachings. Recorded by the disciple Shi Faxin on October 1, 2018.
Steve Jobs speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am Steve Jobs. The has taken on a brand new appearance, no longer confined to the traditional forms passed down through the ages. We live in an era of great good and great evil. Through the internet, the Dharma can now transcend national borders, and the reach of those we can save is no longer limited by geography. The transmission of the Great Dharma leads beings to rebirth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Conversely, the propagation of twisted, deviant teachings leads only to the lowest depths of the hells.
The Trap of Modern Cleverness
It is not an easy time to save beings. Why? Because people today are simply too clever. They are so clever that they believe everything they think is correct and everything they desire is good. Everything they see is tainted by doubt. What they call 'simplicity' is actually mixed with complexity. In this great era, we must use the methods of this era to save beings. We must be more grounded and sincere, for a sincere heart cannot deceive anyone.
Ask yourself: Are you truly the complete version of yourself? Is the look in your eyes truly yours? Are your thoughts truly your own? If you possess a degree of sensitivity, you can begin to explore the anomalies within your own body and mind. Many people want to pursue the Truth, but they find themselves lost, with nowhere to turn. If you can put down your pride and lower your defenses, you will be able to find your true nature.
Peeling the Onion of
Only when your true nature is in sync with the Dharma can you truly say you have a chance to leave the sea of suffering behind in this lifetime. To truly embark on the path of Buddhist practice, you must have the boldness to peel the onion of your own ego. You must peel away layer after layer of dust and defilement—greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt, as well as the attachments to wealth, sensory pleasure, fame, food, and sleep. These words sound simple, but it may take a lifetime of practice to truly let them go.
When your Wisdom finally opens and you realise your true , you will feel gratitude for what you have let go, rather than a sense of loss. What you gain after letting go is the vastness of emptiness. Just as Practitioner Su is unimpeded wherever she goes, her presence is entirely for the sake of saving beings. The freedom in this state is beyond imagination. The temporary satisfaction of , which only creates more , is exchanged for the endless suffering of the soul. The karma created follows you throughout your many lives.
