This is a record of an interview with the Fourth Patriarch of the Huayan School, Master Qingliang, who provided these profound teachings at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. The session was recorded by the chief writer, Venerable Haize, on February 28, 2018.

Master Qingliang speaks:

"What does it truly mean to 'untie' the knots of the mind? And what is the essence of this 'coolness'—this state of ultimate clarity and peace? You must realise that your true nature is originally free. It is originally cool, calm, and collected.

The Illusion of Confusion

It is only because of our deep-seated confusion and our persistent delusions that we fail to distinguish the simple truth of reality. We are lost in a fog of our own making. This is why we need to be reminded again and again, time after time. If these reminders are not enough to wake us up, then we must experience the bitter fruits of our own mistakes firsthand.

We must continue until we finally realise our errors and wake up from this long slumber. We must reach a point where we dare not commit such mistakes again, where we recognise our true nature anew, and where we commit to changing our ways from the very depths of our hearts.

The Weight of

Even though the karmic fruits of our past mistakes may still exist, once the heart has truly changed, the weight of the retribution is significantly lightened. Sometimes, a heavy karmic debt is experienced as only a minor inconvenience, or the retribution is delayed. Or, perhaps, if the heart is completely cleansed and leaves no trace, the karmic fruit has no place to manifest at all.

This requires immense skill and practice. You must not let the mind wander; you must not let the seeds of thought arise. When there is no mind and no thought, where could the past possibly exist? Where could there be any suffering to endure? There is no connection to the past, no future to worry about. There is only the present moment. Only the 'now.' You must seize this very moment.

Finding the Buddha Within

To those who are like children waking from a dream—you may have seen the Buddha in your dreams, but when you wake up, you search for Him. Where can you find the Buddha? He is no longer in the dream. He is within your own heart.

If you wish to find the Buddha of your own heart, you must let go of all worldly conditions and attachments. You must look directly to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. There, you will find the Buddha of your own self-nature. May this blessing extend to all sentient beings, and may all spirits be delivered. Namo Amituofo."
