The Path of Unwavering Persistence

The Ninth Letter of Venerable Fuhui

Reflections on the Nature of Thought and Practice

Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre3 min read0 views

This is a record of an interview with Venerable Fuhui, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. She now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her insights into the nature of practice and the teachings of Practitioner Su. Recorded by the chief writer, Cao Rudi, on July 30, 2017.

Venerable Fuhui speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. The vastness of the cosmos is boundless, encompassing both sentient and insentient beings. The children of the world are lost, wandering throughout the vastness of the Realm. Few truly understand the Truth, the reality of existence, or the universal principle that governs all things.

Thoughts are like fine threads, and the laws of and cause and effect enter through them. Every single drop of action brings its own retribution."

The Power of a Single Thought

"Those who study the Dharma must clearly understand that a single thought contains thirty-six billion hundred-thousand thoughts. Each thought takes form and is immediately stored within the . Namo Amituofo, in His infinite , constantly reminds His disciples to keep the Buddha-name continuous, 24/7. Yet, because our thoughts are so difficult to cease, we find that even the Buddha-name is difficult to maintain.

Consequently, the 'self,' personal ego, and selfishness emerge without warning, and we find ourselves unable to restrain them. They surge forth like a tidal wave. Our , who have a karmic affinity with us, seize this opportunity to rise. These beings may have been within our bodies all along, awakened by our own calls, or they may have been summoned from the vastness of the Dharma Realm by our own wandering thoughts. The terrifying part is that we remain completely unaware of this, blindly following our own habits and ego as we descend further into darkness."

The Thin Line Between Buddha and Demon

"Practitioner Su often mentions in his Dharma talks that demons are also Buddhas. When we lose our compassion and replace it with our own ego, our 'demon nature' may arise. In that moment, we ourselves become the demon. Self-reflection and introspection are vital on the path of Buddhist practice. In fact, in everything we do, constant self-examination is essential; only then do we have the space and opportunity to improve.

On the path of learning from the Buddha, persistence and a firm heart are of the utmost importance. If we lack this, when challenges and trials arise, our resolve will falter. If our thoughts continue to develop in that negative direction, we will never be able to leave this worldly realm. Step by step, we draw closer to the cycle of rebirth, while the path to the Western Pure Land remains distant and unreachable. At many times, you may feel lonely and isolated, but this is the reality of true practice. Before our skills reach the level of mastery, there are necessary sacrifices that we must face. The path of practice is one we must walk to the end; there is no other choice."

The Beauty of

"Only when one truly realises one's true nature—becoming an awakened being—will one understand the beauty of the vast, open sea and sky. Practitioner Su is one who has realised his true nature. How fortunate you all are to have the guidance of such a supreme teacher! You must cherish this opportunity and grasp it firmly.

When I, Fuhui, was still in the world, if I had been able to encounter a true spiritual friend like Practitioner Su, I would certainly have been able to save many more sentient beings. I believe that you, too, can achieve this. The profound visualisation and Chao Du skills of Practitioner Su must be passed down to future generations. This is the true blessing for all spirits and sentient beings."

These are the heartfelt words of Fuhui. Namo Amituofo.
