The Eternal Quest for Life

Since ancient times, birth, aging, sickness, and death have been universally accepted as the inevitable process of human existence. Countless emperors and high officials have sought the secret to agelessness, health, and immortality, yet all have failed to realise their wishes. In the end, they all succumbed to the sufferings of old age and illness, with death as their final destination. Even when they were buried with immense wealth, they could not escape the cycle of death; they could only hope that their spirits might continue to enjoy the luxuries they loved in life.

However, the reality is often far more tragic. Many living people were buried alive as companions to the deceased. As for the souls of those emperors and officials, they were judged based on their actions during their lifetimes. They were often cast into the hells, the animal realm, or the ghost realm, trapped within the six realms of existence. Their status as royalty in the human world vanished like a dream. If even the most powerful rulers could not escape this fate, how much more so for ordinary people, who must simply endure the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death until the end of their lives?

The Buddha's Revelation

Today, however, we hear that a gateway to agelessness, health, and immortality has been realised. While it may seem difficult to believe, it is truly happening. The Buddha’s teachings originated when Shakyamuni Buddha witnessed the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death in the human world. Seeking liberation from these sufferings, he underwent rigorous ascetic practices but did not find the answer. It was only under the tree that he attained and declared: "All beings inherently possess the wisdom and virtue of the Tathagata, but they cannot realise it due to their delusions and attachments."

Following this, he embarked on a magnificent journey of saving the world and spreading the . The Buddha was determined to teach humanity the path to liberation from the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Today, this path is finally being revealed to the world.

A Magnificent Dharma Affinity

Throughout history, many ancestral masters may have understood this principle, but few have realised it so thoroughly. This is truly a magnificent Dharma affinity and a great blessing for all beings. It is worthy of praise and should be proclaimed to the world. Firstly, this is the fundamental Dharma transmitted by the Buddha to save beings from the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Secondly, it fulfils the original aspiration of Master Xuanzang, who travelled far to the West to seek the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, so that suffering beings might find a gateway to eternal liberation.

After enduring countless trials, tribulations, and slanders, he has finally attained Awakening, recovered his , and saved countless beings. He travels freely to and from the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and has moved Namo Amituofo to truly abide in this world. Based on this affinity, he sets an example by proposing the path to agelessness, health, and immortality—a state where remains free from aging and illness, and the spirit attains immortality. This is based on his own personal realisation, which is in sync with the teachings of the Buddha and the great vows of Namo Amituofo. It is truly a ray of hope amidst the suffering of the world. It deserves our respect and should be studied and applied for the benefit of future generations.

Understanding the Sufferings of the World

"My great trouble is that I have a body," said Laozi. This famous saying expresses the inner voice of so many people in this world. Who among ordinary people can avoid sickness and death? Where there is sickness, there is suffering; where there is life, there is death. Everyone believes that this is simply how life is. It is not only humans who suffer from illness; plants, vegetables, fruits, poultry, livestock, fish, shrimp, and other animals—all living beings that the eyes can see—cannot escape the invasion of sickness and death. This is because sickness and death are part of the of the cycle of rebirth.

Does this mean that if one does not enter the cycle of rebirth and has no karma manifesting, there would be no sickness or death? Yes, this is the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, and it is exactly how the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is. Besides individual karma, there are also epidemics and infectious diseases caused by the Collective Karma of local regions, groups, nations, or even the entire world. There is another type of suffering, which is taking on the suffering of beings. This is not caused by individual karma, but is the act of a great compassionate being manifesting in the human world to save and liberate beings.

Birth, aging, sickness, and death constitute the life of all beings with a physical form. The suffering of illness can be roughly divided into three categories: physical illness, mental illness, and spiritual illness. These three influence each other and are interconnected. They arise from the heart; therefore, one must first adjust the heart, and then the body. Regarding the spiritual aspect, one must invite back the lost three hun souls and seven po souls to restore the original, complete spirit. The work of the heart lies in meditative concentration. When the heart is still, the body is still. Restrain yourself from letting thoughts arise. The highest level of skill is to have no thoughts; this is the most fundamental way to cure illness. This is the reason why those who have attained Awakening and meditative concentration are free from the suffering of illness.

Constant mental activity and a restless, fluctuating heart are forms of karmic suffering; thus, one follows the path of fate and karma. People think that it is natural to grow old, get sick, and die. In reality, if one understands the truth, one can avoid this suffering. The karmic creditors seeking revenge is the most common cause of illness. Negative causes lead to negative results, and one dissolves karma through the suffering of sickness and death. Because people do not know or understand this, they allow these sufferings to entangle them. They seek medical treatment, which causes the normal cells and beings within the body to suffer together, while the karmic creditors continue to roam within the body. This treats the symptoms but not the root cause.

The Solution at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre

  • Stop Thinking:
  • Do not ruminate; stop your thoughts. Thinking is like an electrical wave that awakens the karmic creditors within your body and attracts those outside to manifest and seek revenge.Listen to the Dharma:
  • Listen to the sutras and hear the Dharma so that both you and your karmic creditors understand that the cycle of revenge causes suffering for both sides. It is better to advise everyone to let go, recognise Namo Amituofo and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and resolve the conflicts with all beings. Inviting the attached spirits and karmic creditors out of the painful parts of the body, guiding them to leave, and performing Chao Du to send them to the West is the essential method for healing.Accumulate Merit:
  • Practise Goodness and Wisdom, and accumulate merit. This is an important resource for resolving karmic debts.Repentance: Repenting of karmic obstacles is one of the ten great vows of Samantabhadra, which shows its importance. The wrongdoings committed over accumulated lifetimes exist with absolute precision unless the karma is offset by enduring the consequences. This is the principle that "even after a hundred thousand kalpas, the karma created does not disappear." Only by sincerely repenting of your karmic obstacles, and if the karmic creditors are willing to accept your repentance and resolve the grievances, can your sinful karma be reduced.
