The Path to Letting Go
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded on April 12, 2018
This is a record of an interview with Venerable Changren, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his transformation from a leader in the demon realm to a practitioner of the Pure Land path. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on April 12, 2018.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am filled with immense today. The number of beings who have come to receive Chao Du is truly immeasurable and boundless. The three-day assembly has been magnificent, and seeing the joyful hearts of the participants today—everyone who has worked so tirelessly over these past few days to make this event possible—is truly heartening. Namo Amituofo to you all.
The Chains of Worldly Attachment
Before the start of every Dharma assembly, Namo Amituofo offers compassionate teachings and reminders. Like all the attendees, I kneel with a heart full of Dharma joy to listen. Every word and every sentence resonates deeply within me, and I truly understand their meaning. The things that keep us lingering in this world—these are all shackles. Those who cannot wake up from them are hindered in their quiet retreats. When we come into this world in a physical body, we carry with us these difficult-to-sever threads of emotion, the turbulent waves of sentiment, and our own hidden selfishness. Because we do not speak clearly about these things, they become incredibly difficult hurdles to overcome.
People always leave behind lifetimes of regret in this world because they do not understand the importance of 'seeing through' and 'letting go' early enough. It requires immense perseverance and faith to break through the attachments within one's heart—the attachment to oneself, and the attachment to the dusty objects of this world. Actions and events that seem harmless on the surface are often the very source of our greatest spiritual obstacles. This human world is truly terrifying; some mistakenly believe it to be a place of fulfillment and remain infatuated with it, not realising that these things are merely . They do not understand the true nature of reality.
A Leader's Surrender to
I am deeply grateful to have encountered Namo Amituofo and to have acknowledged Practitioner Su. The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre has provided me with a place of refuge within the vast emptiness. I was once a great elder in the demon realm, and now, I serve as a leader among them, guiding many to surrender to the assembly of Namo Amituofo. Many more beings will continue to come.
In the Dharma realm of emptiness, there has never been such a display of genuine sincerity. Although Namo Amituofo is the Saint of Great Compassion, that distance often feels too vast for us to bridge. It is only through the genuine sincerity found in the human world that we can truly feel and connect. I am grateful for the sincere dedication of Practitioner Su. I understand every single bit of it. I am fully aware of the truth that resides within the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Things will only continue to improve, because such truth has not been seen for hundreds of years. Namo Amituofo, immeasurable merits."
