The Ravaged Heart and the Path to Clarity
An Interview with Koo Chung-liang
Recorded on August 11, 2018
This is a record of an interview with Koo Chung-liang, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He reflects upon his life, the pressures of the corporate world, and the challenges of maintaining spiritual clarity amidst the Five Turbidities and Evil World. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxin, on August 11, 2018.
Koo Chung-liang speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. Life is a series of somersaults, full of twists and turns. One must learn to grasp the present moment. All the grand theories and moral teachings in the world cannot compare to the moment one truly wakes up to the truth. Even now, I feel as though I am still drifting in a vast, turbulent ocean.
Tumbling through the currents of , I find myself resonating with the Five Turbidities and Evil World at every turn. I am prone to losing control, and with one careless step, I commit transgressions. I am almost afraid to look at the entries in my own book of life and death, for the weight of it is too much to bear.
The Turbulence of a Corporate Life
Being a financial professional is not easy. Beyond having a sharp eye, one must keep the numbers in one's head moving rapidly. Reactions must be agile, and resources must be allocated with precision. A single minor error can cause investors to lose vast fortunes, and the pressure is constant. It is a world where one must always be on guard.
Wealth now seems illusory to me, yet the wealthy are always particularly obsessed with it. Although I belong to the new generation of corporate leaders, I see the reality of this society all too clearly. No matter how successful a business may be, the human heart has already been ravaged and corrupted by society. Most people think only of their own interests, and the cycle of greed never ends.
The Illusion of Wealth and the Ravaged Heart
How many people can be like Practitioner Su, whose heart is wholeheartedly dedicated to saving others? Practitioner Su cherishes the precious Buddha’s teachings and hopes that more participants will join in spreading these teachings to those who are lost. It is a rare and magnificent thing to witness such dedication.
Practitioner Su has high expectations for me, but every day, after I wake up and undergo purification, I find myself stained again by this society. I do not possess the great fortune of the fourfold assembly at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, who can immerse their physical bodies in the Buddha’s teachings and continuously elevate their spirits. This is a magnificence that has never been seen before and will never be seen again.
A Plea for Patience and Guidance
As long as Practitioner Su does not give up on me, I believe that one day I will be able to meet Practitioner Su again in a state of true clarity. I humbly ask Practitioner Su to have more patience with me as I struggle to find my way. I am deeply grateful for the of the Buddha and Practitioner Su, who help to counsel and deliver the beings connected to my karma every single day.
I am grateful for everything. Namo Amituofo."
