The True Meaning of Letting Go
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded on April 9, 2018, by Chief Writer Shi Faxi
This is a record of an interview with Venerable Changren, who sought spiritual deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He currently resides at the Centre, where he continues his spiritual practice. This account, recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on April 9, 2018, captures his reflections on the profound necessity of truly letting go.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I must admit that my heart is not yet sufficiently refined. When I am confronted with the actions of my past, I realise that I have not truly let go. The reason I have been unable to release these burdens is that I have been trapped in a cycle of regret and repentance. Only now do I understand that even these must be let go. My vow must be aligned with the Buddha’s, and it must be far stronger than it is now. That is the only way to attain true, boundless perseverance. When one can move through experiences without being attached to them, that is when the heart becomes truly pure and cool."
The Illusion of Form and the Path Forward
"I have now deeply realised the nature of empty forms. This morning, I observed the grandmother’s wholehearted efforts in performing for immeasurable and boundless beings. I truly need to learn from this. If I continue to bind myself to my own past mistakes, that would be the ultimate form of selfishness in this world. I, Changren, know that my past faults cannot be undone, but I must now exert every effort to move forward. To walk through this world without attachment—that is the way. I understand this now. I will transform my state of mind and take up my responsibilities immediately. For the sake of the greater good, I cannot remain as I am. Namo Amituofo."
