The Virtue of Great Capacity

During the and the Noon Offering, we reflect upon the profound teachings of Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju. He speaks to us today on the virtue of capacity—the ability to hold, to accept, and to transcend. To be tolerant and to embrace the faults and shortcomings of others is the hallmark of a great mind-capacity. When you can truly open your heart to accept others, you are not merely being passive; you are actively cultivating a vast, spacious inner world. This capacity is the foundation of a compassionate life.

Seeing Only Goodness

How do we achieve this? It begins with how we perceive the world. When your eyes see only the goodness in others, you are no longer blinded by their perceived flaws. To tolerate those who are different from you, and to do so without making discriminations, is the true manifestation of Wisdom. When you stop categorising people into labels of right or wrong, you free yourself from the cycle of judgment and find peace.

The Vessel of the Heart

Consider a container: the larger its capacity, the more it can hold. The same is true for your heart. There is a saying that a great leader’s heart is vast enough to sail a ship. This is a metaphor for those who guide others; they must possess a great mind-capacity to accept people from all walks of life, regardless of their background or nature. For those of us who practise the Buddha’s path, this is not just a suggestion—it is a requirement. We must cultivate this refinement in every interaction, with every person, and in every situation.

The Test of

Remember that each individual must bear the weight of their own laws of karma and cause and effect. It is truly unwise to let the karma of others become your own burden. Why should you suffer because of someone else’s actions? This is a test of your meditative concentration. Can you remain steady when the manifestation of karma appears before you? When you are truly settled, when your heart is an unmoved mind, you will pass this test with ease. Let us strive to be like the vast ocean, capable of receiving all rivers without losing our own clarity. By remaining unmoved, we protect our practice and move closer to the of Ultimate Bliss. Recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
