Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.

The Foundation of Character

Responsibility is a fundamental attitude and behaviour that every individual should embody. Each role we inhabit in life carries its own unique set of duties. A responsible person is one who is reliable and trustworthy, possessing the courage to shoulder their burdens. Conversely, those who fail to uphold their responsibilities often cause harm or loss to others, whether the impact is small or significant.

The Karmic Weight of Neglect

To shirk one’s duty is to create a negative cause, which inevitably leads to the fruit of suffering. When one faces the for such neglect, the experience is always painful. For those on the path of the Buddha, responsibility takes on a deeper, more sacred meaning. One must first take full responsibility for their own practice, and beyond that, carry the responsibility to help all suffering beings leave suffering behind.

Diligence and the Path Forward

Whether you are engaged in diligent practice or falling into the trap of laziness, you must hold yourself accountable. You are the guardian of your own spiritual growth. You must take responsibility for your own self-supervision, ensuring that you are moving forward rather than stagnating. As you progress, you will find that your perception becomes sharper and your reactions more aligned with the Truth. Every step you take, every improvement you make, is dedicated to a singular, noble goal: to save yourself and all beings from the cycle of being reincarnated, and to finally attain rebirth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Namo Amituofo.
