Rectifying Body and Mind
During the seventh day of the Yilan seminar, titled the Life-Heart, Living a New Life, held in conjunction with the Zhongfeng , offered a profound teaching on the nature of humility. He likened the spiritual practitioner to a stalk of rice heavy with grain. When the rice is full and ripe, it naturally bows its head toward the earth. This is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to its maturity and substance.
If you believe you have reached a state of fullness, you must remember that true greatness is found in humility and in lowering oneself. The form of the rice ear, bowing low, represents a person of noble virtue and proper upbringing. When your heart follows the right path, your actions will naturally align with the truth. The transforms the heart, and when this transformation is genuine, one becomes authentic and sincere in every thought and deed.
Humility is the foundation of your character, and maturity is the standard by which you measure your progress. You may believe you have attained wisdom, but if you feel you have reached a point of completion, you are mistaken. True wisdom is found in the constant recognition that there is always more to learn and more to purify. One should never feel that they have reached a state of absolute perfection; instead, one must remain humble, like the bowing rice, to continue growing.
Addressing the residents of Yilan, Namo Amituofo compared the current moment to the time of the rice harvest. Just as the farmer gathers the ripe grain, each moment of your life is precious and must be lived with purpose. You must not let your life pass by in vain, lost in the cycle of birth and death. You must ask yourself: where are you following? Are you moving toward the light of the of Ultimate Bliss, or are you merely drifting through the cycle of samsara?
To be truly awake is to understand the nature of your existence. If you do not recognise the suffering inherent in the cycle of rebirth, you will continue to be bound by it. You must know when to stop, when to turn away from the wrong path, and when to commit yourself fully to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. By chanting Namo Amituofo, you can leave suffering behind and find the true happiness that comes from the purification of your original nature. This is the path to genuine awakening, and it is the only way to ensure that your life is not wasted.
