During the second session of the , Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided profound guidance on the dual paths of transcendence and engagement. These teachings serve as a vital compass for all practitioners navigating the complexities of the world.

The Path of Transcendence

To transcend the world means to liberate oneself from the cycle of rebirth. The of transcendence refers to the specific methods and practices that allow one to escape this cycle. When you engage in the practice of transcendence, you are working to rediscover your original true self. This is the stage of self-liberation, where you focus on purifying your mind and spirit, ensuring that you are no longer swayed by external conditions.

The Harmony of Self-Liberation and Service

Once you have attained a state of inner stability, you are ready to enter the world to save others. This is the true meaning of engagement. It is not enough to seek only your own peace; the ultimate goal of your practice is to extend that to all beings. You must first master the art of self-liberation so that you may effectively help others leave suffering behind. This balance between personal cultivation and the compassionate act of saving others is the hallmark of a true practitioner.

Recognising the Truth of the Universe

The Buddha’s teachings are the ultimate truth and the reality of the universe. Whether one is transcending the world or engaging with it, both activities take place within the world itself. The Buddha’s teachings are never separate from the laws of the world. Whether you are focusing on the path of transcendence or the path of engagement, the ultimate truth of all things is contained within the Buddha’s teachings. Therefore, the education provided by the Buddha’s teachings is designed to help everyone recognise the Universal Principles and the true reality of existence.

Within the illusory appearances of the cycle of rebirth, your first priority is to seek transcendence—to liberate yourself. Only then can you enter the world to save others, helping them leave suffering behind. This is the vital purpose of your practice. May we all strive to walk this path with sincerity and compassion, guided by the wisdom of the Buddha.
