Transcending the Subtle Trap of Greed
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Recorded by the Chief Writer, Shi Faxi
The Endless Hunger of the Wandering Heart
Greed is a pervasive force that binds us to the cycle of rebirth. In this world, people are often consumed by their desires. They crave wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep. These act as a gateway to the hells, pulling the spirit deeper into the cycle of suffering. Why do we cling to these emotions and allow ourselves to be governed by such insatiable cravings? We must understand that every thought and intention we harbour shapes our future destiny.
Greed, which belongs to the Demon Realm, is characterised by a profound sense of insufficiency. It is a state where one never feels satisfied. Whether in our daily movements, our rest, or our interactions, we are constantly demanding more. We seek endless material goods, sensory pleasures, gourmet foods, and excessive entertainment. True contentment is rare in this world. If someone were to speak of the suffering inherent in these pursuits, they might be viewed as an outcast. Yet, those who seek to transcend this suffering and maintain a clear, luminous mind are truly on the path to great achievement. Those who are not clear in their minds are often controlled by these external forces, leading to a state of spiritual confusion.
The Subtle Shadows in Our Daily Choices
We must examine how greed manifests in our daily lives. It is not merely about wanting more; it is about the inability to let go. When we encounter beautiful things, the desire to possess them is greed. Even when we have our basic needs met, the failure to follow the natural flow of conditions is a form of greed. Very few people limit themselves to what is truly necessary. Most want a little more, and then a little more again, hoping for an endless supply. When we fail to realise that all phenomena are empty by nature, we cling to the hope of storing things for a future that may never come. We call this being prepared, but in truth, it is often a manifestation of greed.
Consider the habits we form in our daily lives. In our consumer culture, we are often driven by the fear that we might suffer a loss if we do not stock up on goods during sales. We end up with homes filled with things we never use. This is a clear manifestation of greed disguised as thriftiness. Similarly, consider our relationship with food. We often eat beyond the point of being full. When we encounter a delicious meal, we feel that not eating more would be a loss. We consume more than our bodies require, turning nourishment into waste. This is a subtle form of greed—the desire to possess the taste of the food for just a little longer. If we have the to enjoy a delicious meal, we should be grateful and content, leaving the rest for others, rather than indulging in the greed of the palate.
The Hidden Snares on the Path of Practice
Even on the path of spiritual practice, greed can manifest in ways that are incredibly subtle and dangerous. A practitioner must be vigilant against these hidden traps. We may find ourselves craving merit, blessings, or wisdom. We may even crave the feeling of being 'pure' or 'empty.' However, if these desires are driven by a craving for a specific state, they become another form of attachment. If you find yourself wanting more, you must look into your heart and ask: What is the intention behind this desire? If you have one, you want two. If you have two, you want three. This is the mechanism of greed. The key to breaking this cycle is to cultivate contentment. As the saying goes, contentment brings constant . However, this is difficult for most people to achieve.
We must always align ourselves with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. If our heart is not aligned with these, we are prone to falling into the traps of the Demon Realm. Whether it is craving affection, friendship, or the validation of others, these emotional attachments are layers of the trap. On the path of practice, we must be careful not to crave spiritual states, psychic powers, or rapid progress. These desires can lead one away from the True Teachings. If we are not careful, even our practice can become a source of greed, and we may lose our way entirely.
from the Illusion of the Demon Realm
I speak to you as one who has resided in the Demon Realm, though I was once an eminent monk. The Buddha’s teachings are the only force capable of truly educating the human heart. In this age, the human heart has become more treacherous than the demons themselves. People divide themselves into 'self' and 'other,' 'Buddha' and 'demon.' You must remember that the demon and the Buddha are not separate; they are determined by the direction of the heart. If the heart is tilted, even a Buddha can become a demon. Be cautious.
I was once known as Shi Fazhang. When I entered the Demon Realm, I saw through the vanity of the world, but I had not yet truly let go. Now, I have truly let go. I have spent countless ages in the space between the Demon Realm and the void, and I have come to understand the terror of the ten directions. Only the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss offers a true escape. I am grateful that Namo Amituofo has not abandoned me. Even after a millennium, the Buddha still stands upon the lotus platform, waiting to lead me home. Namo Amituofo is the light that can guide us out of the darkness of the Demon Realm.
