Transforming Thoughts: A Dialogue with Namo Amituofo

The Path to True Healing
If you wish to heal an illness, you must seek medicine or behavioural therapy. But is this truly the ultimate solution? If you wish to resolve the root cause of an illness, you must engage in sincere repentance and hold a heart of true vows. Is this not the foundation of ultimate faith?
Each person has their own destiny and their own fortune. How you choose to act is a conclusion reached by your own heart. When you are born into this world, it may seem as though three parts of your life are fixed by fate, while seven parts are determined by your own efforts. In reality, all ten parts are created by your own actions. Your destiny is a continuous process of creation. Whether you are wealthy or poor, healthy or frail, you are the one who determines the course of your life through your choices in this present moment.
The Enterprise of Human Existence
You may choose to transform your path or continue creating as you have before, believing that this is your destiny, that you are merely following fate, or that you are listening to the heavens. In truth, everything is governed by the laws of and cause and effect. Every result you experience today is the manifestation of a cause you planted previously, and the ripening of these karmic fruits is inevitable.
Whether your current state is positive or negative, it is entirely dependent on the transformation of your heart. If you can guide your life with Goodness, you will find that your journey becomes much smoother. Life is not merely a short, bitter struggle; it is a journey of great momentum. Think of it like a sudden thunderstorm on a summer afternoon; if you keep moving forward, you will soon run past the rain and find the clear, bright sky. This kind of openness and clarity can only be cultivated through the management of your life and your dedication to the Buddha’s teachings.
The Corporation of the Human Body
You must realise that you do not truly own anything in this world; you are merely the manager of your life. You have been granted the right to operate this life, but you must never attempt to possess it as your own. Share the rewards with your subordinates—the beings around you. If you seek to possess everything alone, you will surely drown in your own greed. Only through sharing can you truly enjoy the fruits of your labour. Only then will your enterprise endure; otherwise, it will surely fail. If your subordinates infringe upon your rights, you must be willing to step down.
If you believe your body is truly yours, that is the root of greed and selfishness. This human body is the true enterprise you are tasked with managing. Your internal organs are the various departments that keep your human body enterprise running. You must treat these departments with and care. If you operate your life with Goodness and maintain a heart of pure, virtuous thoughts, the entire enterprise will flourish. However, if you operate with greed and selfishness, your own departments will rebel against you.
The Alchemy of Transforming Thoughts
Many serious illnesses, such as cancer, are the result of past actions where you betrayed your own inner nature. Because you once acted with selfishness, your body is now reacting against you. However, if you can make a great vow to perform great deeds and cultivate great Goodness, your energy field will shift. This shift has the power to reverse the negative and turn it into the positive. When you transform evil into Goodness, what was once evil becomes good, what was once rebellious becomes righteous, and what was once poverty becomes abundance.
Pure thoughts and sincere Goodness can lead to this transformation. If your thoughts are impure, mixed, and chaotic, even your attempts at Goodness will be tainted by evil. Therefore, you must be diligent. Do not allow evil thoughts to take root. Goodness has the power to save beings, while evil leads only to destruction. Because everything arises from your thoughts, you must be mindful of what you say, what you see, and what you think. You must constantly practise the right transformation of your mind.
If you understand this, you will realise that your success does not come from the strength of the Buddha’s teachings alone, but from your own ability to transform your thoughts. When your thoughts are transformed, your destiny is set on a new course. The human world can often feel like a purgatory, especially in places of sickness and suffering. There is endless suffering, and the spirits of resentment often linger nearby. Regardless of your age, if you know how to change your path, you can engage in right thoughts and right actions. You do not necessarily need to be a devout follower of a religion to start this process. You only need to believe in Goodness, perform good deeds, and spread kindness. By purifying your thoughts and actions, you can make everything in your life beautiful and virtuous. The merit of such a life is immeasurable. I hope that all beings will practise Goodness, plant good causes, and live in a state of perfect beauty and harmony.
