's discourse:
The four cardinal directions and above and below refer to the spatial directions of east, west, south, north, and the zenith and nadir.
Broadly, it refers to the Ten Directions (of the Realm), extending to the boundless.
Time refers to the three periods of time: past, present, and future.
Amitabha Buddha's Dharma affinity enters the boundless Ten Directions (of the Dharma Realm) from the four cardinal directions and above and below.
The Infinite Life Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the , Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Sutra) mentions
"worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges in the four cardinal directions and above and below" and their countless Buddha lands,
"all Buddhas praise the inconceivable merits of the Buddha of Infinite Life."
This signifies the majestic merits of Amitabha Buddha,
which all Buddhas praise throughout the worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges in the four cardinal directions and above and below.
Time and space encompass the state of the Dharma Realm.
Everything proceeds within time and space;
whether good or bad, right or wrong, kindness or resentment, all have become the past,
passing in the blink of an eye like an illusion.
What is there to be attached to? What is there to care about? Attachment and concern only create negative and lead to suffering.
If one is a wise person, one is clear in the present moment, knowing the essence is illusory,
regardless of the circumstances or events encountered, one is not trapped or deluded, but remains clear in one’s heart.
Beings live in various different spaces, and all phenomena exist within them,
this is the state of reincarnated beings.
If there is no limitation of time and space, and all is merged into one,
then one is not limited by time and space,
and can freely come and go through various times and spaces; this is the state of Buddha or , and awakened beings.
Buddha or Bodhisattva and awakened beings, to save beings, give rise to all phenomena within their hearts.
All phenomena arise from the heart,
because there is no self, their actions are not governed by karma, and they are able to be at ease.
If one makes good use of time, lives in the present moment, and acts not for oneself but for all beings,
then the meaning of life will expand, even to the boundless.
If one recognises and understands space, one will not be bound by it,
one will not easily let oneself fall into dullness or become trapped within space,
causing one’s awareness to be covered and making it difficult to remain clear,
hindering progress in one’s practice and losing the opportunity to realise one’s true nature.
