Do you pass your days in a state of confusion, or do you live them with absolute clarity? This is a question that defines the very quality of your existence. Whether we consider a single day or the entirety of a lifetime, the choice between confusion and determines our ultimate destination. If we live in a fog, we drift aimlessly; if we live with clarity, we walk the path of the Buddha with purpose.
Confusion and clarity are not merely states of mind; they are the compass by which we navigate our journey through the six realms of existence. To live in confusion is to be lost, while to live in clarity is to be found.
When one is lost in the fog of confusion, one drifts aimlessly into different dimensions of space. In this state, one is blind to the hidden dangers and difficulties that permeate these spaces. We often wander through life unaware of the karmic currents pulling us in various directions. However, when one’s eyes are opened through the light of awakening, one sees the truth of reality. With this clarity, one can navigate around the perils that would otherwise ensnare the soul, avoiding the traps of the six realms of rebirth.
Confusion is the anchor that keeps us trapped in the endless cycle of the six realms of rebirth. It is a state of perpetual motion without progress. Awakening, conversely, is the path of chanting Buddha's name. By holding fast to this practice, we fulfil our Buddha-vow and secure our return to the Western Land. This is the only way to break free from the cycle that has held us captive for countless lifetimes.
In our confusion, we become deeply attached to this physical body, mistaking the transient and illusory for the eternal and real. We cling to what is temporary, believing it to be our true self. Awakening allows us to distinguish clearly between the true and the false, the real and the illusory. We are no longer deceived by the shadows of this world, for we have come to know the truth of our original nature.
Confusion leads us to endure suffering while simultaneously creating more of it. We dig ourselves deeper into the abyss of pain, making our suffering even more profound as we chase after desires that can never satisfy us. Awakening means that when we encounter suffering, we recognise it for what it is. We act immediately to leave suffering behind, ensuring that we are no longer bound by its chains. By choosing the path of the Buddha, we find the strength to transcend our pain and move toward the peace of the Western Land.
