During the , we must focus our attention on the essential discipline of our practice. To restrain our Body, Speech, and Mind is the fundamental requirement for every practitioner. We must turn our gaze inward, constantly reflecting upon our own actions, introspecting, and sincerely repenting to change our ways. This internal discipline is not merely a personal choice; it is a vital pillar of self-management within the monastic community. Without this foundation, our practice remains superficial, and we risk losing the very clarity we seek to cultivate.
What exactly is meant by idle talk? It is any form of speech or mental activity that deviates from the path of purity and wisdom. It manifests in many ways, such as:
When we allow our Body, Speech, and Mind to be occupied by these distractions, we are engaging in idle talk. Such behaviour creates ripples of confusion that disturb the stillness of our practice.
Within the dignified environment of our practice, we must uphold the highest standards of conduct. It is essential that we treat one another with mutual respect and courtesy. We must diligently practise the various rituals and protocols of the Buddha’s gate, for these are the vessels that hold our devotion. In every interaction, we should embody the following virtues:
We must ask ourselves: are we doing enough? Even if we feel we are being sincere, upright, and pure, it is still not enough. Even if we are practising stillness, silence, and non-attachment, it is still not enough. We must be cautious in the most subtle aspects of our lives to grow our virtue, yet even this is not enough. We must constantly transform our , repent, and change our ways, yet even this is not enough. We must diligently perform our prostrations, chant , and recite the Sutras, yet even this is not enough. We must maintain a sharp awareness and ensure our Six Roots are pure, yet even this is not enough. How, then, can we justify engaging in idle talk that causes our mental notes to fluctuate endlessly? How can we justify discussing the faults of others or demanding that they change to suit our preferences? When others point out our own mistakes, how can we justify reacting with anger or displeasure? We have no resources to waste on such stubbornness, which only leads to the continuous creation of negative karma.
You must remain awake and alert at every moment. Your heart should be clear, pure, and anchored in meditative concentration. We must work to change the "self," personal ego, and selfishness, for it is only by transforming these habits that we can truly refine our character. By treating others with , wisdom, and a vast mind-capacity, we finally begin to walk the path of a true practitioner. Let us leave behind the distractions of the world and focus entirely on the path to Awakening, ensuring that our every thought and action is aligned with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
