The Essence of Righteous Action

Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by Venerable HaiZe on 30 July 2022.

When you know what is right, you must pursue it with unwavering focus. You must go straight ahead without hesitation. But one may ask, what truly defines what is right? In the context of our spiritual journey, that which is right is defined by its alignment with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. If an action, word, or thought does not violate these three pillars, then it is indeed the right path to follow.

The Dangers of a Polluted Mind

Often, people rely upon their polluted minds to judge the world around them. They observe the actions, words, and deeds of others—including those of fellow practitioners—through a lens clouded by personal bias and attachment. Because they lack true insight, they often create negative causes and commit grave errors in their judgment. While harming oneself is a small matter, the consequences of harming other beings and spirits are profound and far-reaching.

Many remain lost in this cycle of confusion, unable to find their way back to the truth. In doing so, they inadvertently increase the number of victims who suffer under the weight of these misguided actions. This is why it is so vital to cultivate clarity and wisdom, ensuring that our are not governed by the shadows of the past.

Courage on the Path of Practice

Therefore, when you have identified the right path, you must walk it straight ahead. Even when you encounter obstacles or resistance, you must remain steadfast. Those who lack the necessary may choose to retreat when faced with difficulty, but those who possess the seeds of wisdom will be able to listen, understand, and persevere.

The ultimate goal of your practice is to benefit all beings and to help them leave suffering behind. To do this, you must be fearless. You must have the courage to take responsibility for your actions and to remain committed to the welfare of others. This unwavering dedication, combined with a heart that seeks only the good of all, is the most wonderful method for achieving success in your practice. May you always walk this path with a clear heart and a resolute spirit.
