Reflections on the Path of Deliverance

This is a record of an interview with Ma Yun, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He reflects on his journey toward spiritual and his participation in the work of deliverance. Recorded by the chief writer, Hai Pin, on August 30, 2018.

Ma Yun speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. I am Ma Yun. Every day, I participate in the deliverance, joining the ranks of those dedicated to saving the world. This is a process of sharing the work of salvation and, in doing so, finding my true self again.

The Fleeting Nature of Worldly Happiness

I remember walking along a long riverbank. A pair of butterflies danced gracefully, fluttering around the small flowers along the edge of the path. They seemed so happy, so content, and so perfectly fulfilled. The reeds on both sides of the riverbank grew as tall as a person, swaying rhythmically to and fro with the gentle breeze that brushed against my face. The setting sun cast a faint, golden glow across the horizon; the scenery was truly breathtaking. A young couple strolled along the riverbank, their presence echoing the lighthearted dance of the butterflies nearby.

As I followed the senior practitioner during this morning's Chao Du, we were moving quite quickly. As we passed through a town, that scene caught my eye. It looked so happy and complete, yet I knew deep down that such worldly happiness is never lasting. My heart sank for a moment. When I compared that fleeting scene to the current situation of my own family, I could not help but let out a long, heavy sigh. Oh, how life changes!

The Wealth of the Heart

There was a time, not so long ago, when I would walk along those country paths with my wife. We were not wealthy in terms of money back then, but our hearts were rich. We possessed a kind of inner abundance that is often lost in the pursuit of worldly gain.

Every day, I follow the senior practitioner in performing Chao Du. The number of sentient beings requiring deliverance is truly infinite—it is an endless sea of spirits. Witnessing this leaves me trembling with awe and fear. If I had not truly encountered the senior practitioner and found the True Teachings, there is no doubt that I, too, would be just one of those countless, suffering spirits, lost in the cycle of samsara.

A Life of Meaning and Giving

Life in this world lasts only a few short decades. If we cannot accomplish something truly meaningful during our time here, then our existence is merely a wasted effort, a hollow performance. I am deeply grateful to the senior practitioner, and I am grateful for the Buddha’s teachings, which have allowed me to rethink how I might spend the remainder of my later years doing something different, something that truly matters.

Throughout a person's life, beyond the constant taking from society, there should be a corresponding level of giving and Generosity. I have come to believe that the of helping others and the resulting peace of mind are things that can never be measured by mere numbers or financial wealth.

A Commitment to the Future

The matter of the temple construction has always been close to my heart. I am ready, waiting for the right moment to act. I hold the flag of this mission tightly in my hands, and I have no intention of letting it go or passing it to anyone else. Senior practitioner, I believe you know this to be true. Please have faith in me, just as I now have one hundred percent faith in Namo Amituofo. Namo Amituofo!"
