If you are a person of the world, you are naturally busy with worldly affairs. You believe that you must give your all to these worldly tasks, striving for success, wealth, and recognition. However, you must realise that what you gain from these pursuits is merely . These actions bind you to the laws of karma and cause and effect, ensuring that you remain reincarnated. It is far better to simply follow conditions as they arise, maintaining a calm heart, and refrain from creating new, heavy karma that will only weigh you down in the future.
If you are a practitioner, however, your focus must shift. You should be busy with the work of practice. Your efforts are directed toward the transcendent path, where not a single action is performed for your own selfish benefit. Everything you do is for the sake of all beings, and you should give your all to this noble cause. Though you may not seek merit or virtue, you will find yourself filled with them through your selfless dedication.
You only truly gain after you have given your all. The results of worldly karma are limited, and there is an end to both the Goodness and evil deeds of the mundane world. Yet, the merit and virtue of the spiritual path are immeasurable. To walk this path, you must commit yourself fully to the following:
