The Karmic Origins of Our Character
Many people believe that their personality is shaped solely by their upbringing, education, and the environment in which they live. While these factors certainly play a role, we must realise that our personality is, in truth, a product of the cycle of reincarnation and a manifestation of our accumulated . It is not a new creation of this current life; rather, it is a continuation of traits that have followed us through countless past lives across the various realms of existence.
When we find our personality manifesting in the present, it is often because we are encountering situations that mirror those we faced in the past. Because we are unaware of the deep connection between our character and our past lives, we often allow our personality to dictate our actions. We may even use our personality as a tool to achieve our personal goals, unaware that this very behaviour invites our past karma and to manifest. This leads to the suffering of old age, sickness, and even the agony of death.
A Five-Fold Path to Transformation
If you wish to break free from these patterns and truly change your personality, you must follow a clear and disciplined path:
- Recognise the consequences: Understand that your current personality traits are a significant barrier to your spiritual progress. If you do not change, you will continue to drift in the cycle of reincarnation, and your hope for rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss will remain unfulfilled.
- Listen to the : You must listen to the sutras and hear the Dharma regularly. This will help you understand that all the suffering you experience is closely related to your personality.
- Cultivate and wisdom: When you realise that the beings who appear to cause you trouble are actually your karmic creditors seeking balance, your heart will naturally soften. Let compassion arise, and use this to fuel your desire to change your character.
- Transform your mental state: Make a conscious effort to think good thoughts, see the good in others, do good deeds, and speak good words. By doing so, you will grow and eventually achieve the fruit of .
- Chant Namo Amituofo: This is the most essential step. You must chant with absolute sincerity and honesty.
