On the fourth of October, 2024, during the noon offering of the , Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided profound guidance on the vital task of transforming one's personality. This teaching was recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
Many people believe that their personality is shaped solely by their upbringing, education, and the environment in which they live. While these factors certainly play a role, we must realise that our personality is, in truth, a product of the cycle of reincarnation and a manifestation of our accumulated . It is not a new creation of this current life; rather, it is a continuation of traits that have followed us through countless past lives across the various realms of existence.
When we find our personality manifesting in the present, it is often because we are encountering situations that mirror those we faced in the past. Because we are unaware of the deep connection between our character and our past lives, we often allow our personality to dictate our actions. We may even use our personality as a tool to achieve our personal goals, unaware that this very behaviour invites our past karma and to manifest. This leads to the suffering of old age, sickness, and even the agony of death.
If you wish to break free from these patterns and truly change your personality, you must follow a clear and disciplined path:
When you chant Namo Amituofo, you are combining your own efforts with the infinite assistance of the Buddha. It is through this practice that you can truly transform your state of mind and change your personality. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by delusions or messy thoughts. Instead, chant with clarity and focus, ensuring that each recitation follows the last without interruption.
When you chant in this way, you do not need to rely on any other methods. Your heart will naturally open, and your true nature will be revealed. By letting go of the ego and the rigid personality traits that have bound you to samsara, you allow the light of Namo Amituofo to shine through you. This is the path to leaving suffering behind and finding true happiness.
