On the twenty-first of July, 2023, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered these vital teachings on the necessity of letting go of .
Consider the nature of this "self" that we cling to so tightly. It is often covered in layers of spiritual filth. It is defined by selfishness, stubbornness, and a strong sense of subjectivity. It is a self that is deeply attached to its own personality, a mixture of Goodness and evil, and often clouded by wrong views and ignorance. Because of this attachment, our heart drives our body and spirit into the cycle of reincarnation, where we have committed countless sins and caused harm to countless beings throughout our many lifetimes.
In our journey through the cycle of reincarnation, we have been trapped in a state where it continues to grow and consume beings without pause. Our lives have become a repetitive cycle of seeking to collect debts from others, repaying the debts we owe, repaying kindnesses received, and resolving past grievances and resentments. This is the exhausting reality of a life governed by ego-attachment, where we are constantly reacting to the karmic echoes of our past actions.
Now, we find ourselves at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre. Namo Amituofo is residing here, providing us with a sacred space for transformation. If you truly wish to be free, you must learn to let go of the "self." You must be willing to let go of the sensations of , let go of the attachments of the heart, let go of your ego-attachment and your personal views, let go of your subjectivity and your stubborn personality, and let go of the past and everything you once held dear. You must take this ignorant self, which has been trapped in the cycle of reincarnation, and surrender it entirely to Namo Amituofo.
By following the teachings and guidance of the Buddha, you can practise diligently to change your ways. Under the compassionate leadership of Practitioner Su, you must move forward step by step. This path requires you to be honest, to listen, and to serve the masses with a sincere heart. Through the process of purification, you will gradually transform into someone who is selfless and entirely devoted to the well-being of others. You will become a practitioner who is Living the Vows: The Direct Way to , rather than remaining a person defined by a body of .
When you finally see your own pure, dignified, and unstained self—the original self that is capable of taking charge of its own destiny—you have reached the moment of being an awakened being. This is the true nature that has been waiting to be revealed all along. Namo Amituofo.
