The path to becoming an awakened being is paved with the continuous, diligent practice of purification. One might say that reaching the state of an awakened being is the ultimate result of a process that involves refining the heart and mind again and again. It is a journey of constant advancement, where one progresses steadily within the state of purity itself. This is not a destination that is reached in a single moment, but rather the cumulative fruit of persistent, heartfelt effort.
It is remarkably easy for the mind to descend from a state of purity into the murky waters of defilement. Conversely, the journey to remove these deep-seated stains and attain true purity is a challenging, uphill climb. Throughout our countless past lives, we have spent far more time immersed in the dust of the world than we have in the light of purification. Because of this, we have become intimately familiar with the nature of defilement. Our habits, our personality traits, and our ingrained tendencies make it all too easy for us to accept and absorb various forms of worldly pollution in a very short amount of time.
In comparison, the process of purification requires us to overcome many obstacles. We must confront our deep-seated habits and the rigid structures of our own personalities. Only by diligently working through these barriers can we finally reap the fruits of true purification. This is why it is so simple to fall into the trap of defilement, yet so difficult to cleanse the heart and return to a state of purity.
Today, the fourfold assembly of disciples is fortunate to be situated within a Buddha-land. The manifestation of such a in this world is truly rare and precious. The defiled environments of the world, along with the people and events that typically trigger afflictions and distractions, have been set aside. This sanctuary has been created so that you may practise with a peaceful and settled heart.
However, even within this protected space, you must remain vigilant. The defiled tendencies of your personality and the beings you have attracted over many lifetimes are still layered upon your body. You must be willing to remove these personality traits and work towards the purification of all the beings who reside within you. Only when you have successfully cleansed your body can you truly progress in your practice. You must ensure that purification and advancement go hand in hand, never retreating, for this is the only way to attain the fruit of an awakened being.
Since you are already here, you must strive to seek progress within this purity. I hope that you will soon rediscover your true self and join the Buddha and Practitioner Su in the noble work of saving the world and rescuing all suffering beings. May you remain steadfast in your devotion and continue to walk the path of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. .
