In the Buddha’s teachings, we speak of Purity. In the world, we speak of Serenity. While these two concepts may seem similar, Purity is a deeper, more profound state than Serenity. However, both are equally vital for the practitioner on the path to attain Buddhahood. One cannot truly progress without embracing both the depth of Purity and the stillness of Serenity.
Purity refers to the state of being clean and untainted. It involves the comprehensive purification of the body, the heart, and the spirit, as well as the purification of . Serenity is often reflected in our external appearance, yet it also signifies a profound inner stillness and peace within the body. Regardless of how you define them, both Purity and Serenity are essential requirements for success in your Buddha’s path.
The study of the is a study of Purity. When the state of Purity and the state of Serenity support one another, they work together to foster a sense of profound peace. When you achieve true purification of your Body-Mind-Spirit, these states of Purity and Serenity will naturally manifest. You will find that a sense of ease, freedom, and refreshing coolness dwells within you.
The six-character holy name of is the supreme key. It encompasses everything: pure Goodness, absolute purity, the process of purification, profound serenity, liberation through rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and the ultimate attainment of Buddhahood. You must hold firmly to this practice, for it is the most wonderful method for achieving success in the Pure Land path.
