The Seven-Thousand-Trillion-Year Demon
An Interview with the Ancient Demon Mo Han Ta
Recorded by Venerable HaiZe on February 24, 2025
This is a record of an interview with Mo Han Ta, a Primordial Demon who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Land of Nature. This account reflects upon his existence spanning 7,830 trillion years. Recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on February 24, 2025.
Mo Han Ta speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. My name is Han-da Han-da, which translates into Chinese as Mo Han Ta. I have been using this name for seven thousand eight hundred and thirty trillion years. To be perfectly honest, I can barely remember that number myself. In the Demon Realm, one day simply bleeds into the next. There is no day, no night—just the same suffocating, absolute darkness. How is anyone supposed to keep track of time in a place like that? It is only here, by asking Namo Amituofo, that I have been able to convert my existence into the days you use on Earth. Otherwise, who could possibly calculate such an unfathomable span of time?"
The Complexity of Space and Dimensions
"Our space is fundamentally different from yours. On Earth, you have the six realms of rebirth, which are distinct dimensions. To travel from Earth to the Dharma Realm, or from the Dharma Realm back to Earth, one must have the ability to break through these spatial barriers. The distance is so vast, passing through countless layers of space—it is truly beyond counting. I heard Practitioner Su mention in a Dharma assembly recently that this distance spans hundreds of millions of billions of layers! I find the units of measurement you use on Earth quite fascinating, though they are also rather hair-raising to hear. But for us, this is just the natural state of things. Since the distance is so immense, it is naturally difficult to calculate the layers of space clearly. In truth, one can see these many layers right before one's eyes; as long as you have the intention, the moment a thought arises, you can see them. If one's eyes are capable of perceiving more subtle dimensions, it simply means that person's meditative concentration is deeper."
"In terms of practice, those with deep attainment must possess great merit. As you say, to become a Buddha, how could one possibly succeed without sufficient merit? Becoming a Buddha is about saving beings, and every single being is so stubborn and difficult to subdue. How much merit does it take to guide them to a state of harmony? If it is a demon being, and the one trying to guide them lacks attainment, lacks merit, and lacks virtue, they will absolutely never be able to subdue us. In fact, we would likely end up subduing them instead!"
The Two Extremes of Demon Nature
"If a person has many attached spirits on them and they are becoming increasingly disobedient, well, that is only natural! Those who are truly disobedient are demons. To us, that is just how it is! If a demon were obedient, they wouldn't be called a demon, would they? However, this also presents a phenomenon of two extremes. The 'little demons' who have just entered the Demon Realm are incredibly well-behaved and obedient; they wouldn't dare to have an opinion of their own. But as they grow older, their opinions multiply. Once a small demon becomes a great demon or a Demon King, they put their own first and feel they can run rampant across the world.
"If they live long enough—like me, reaching the age of 7,830 trillion years—I can tell you that demons of this age are actually very obedient. We don't dare to do evil because we have seen too much! It is like returning to the time when I was a small demon; I am very well-behaved, I don't dare to let a thought arise, and I don't dare to have an opinion, because I know that the laws of and cause and effect will snatch me away."
The Vanishing Act
"The volatility is greatest among the demons in the middle of these two extremes. They will do anything to get ahead. The more ruthless they are, the higher their 'achievement' in the Demon Realm. But once you ascend to the level of an ancient demon—those who have lived for trillions of years—you don't even dare to look at or think about the things that happened in the past. You don't dare to have an opinion, because that creates a ripple, a movement of thought, and you never know when the laws of karma and cause and effect will snatch you away, removing you from this space entirely.
"In truth, we have become accustomed to this. Sometimes, a demon who is speaking to you or living alongside you will suddenly vanish right before your eyes, disappearing from this dimension. You don't know where they have gone; you only know that you will never see them again. So, you silently feel a sense of sorrow for them. In the Demon Realm, this means 'they are gone.' It is just like how people in the human world say 'he has died' when someone disappears from sight. If they weren't dead, they would still be here; they wouldn't just vanish. It is the same for demons. We are spirits. When a demon suddenly disappears, where did that spirit go? It is gone. Young demons cannot see these spatial shifts and have no idea where their companion has gone. But we old and ancient demons know—they have gone to receive their retribution and suffer. There is no good ending for them. That is why every ancient demon is so well-behaved; we don't dare to act rashly. Now, the logic of the two extremes is easy to understand, isn't it? And we almost never reveal ourselves."
"However, Practitioner Su demands that you all be capable of demonstrating that the Dharma is the ultimate 'high technology.' The fact that he expects this of you means you possess such potential—this is a little secret I am revealing to you. But I must say, I find you all quite lacking! The demon crowds throw just a tiny bit of frustration your way, and you are already knocked off balance, swaying left and right. If you were to join the demon ranks, I suspect you would collapse in no time; you would never make it as a great demon! Of course, under Practitioner Su’s guidance, it is impossible for you to become demons. He keeps a very tight watch over you, which is truly your blessing. For us in the demon realms, attempting to influence you at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is a monumental challenge."
A Debt of Gratitude to Practitioner Su
"Nevertheless, we hold a heart of gratitude toward Practitioner Su. After all, without him, Namo Amituofo would not have come to Earth, and there would be no Western Land of Dharma Nature at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Practitioner Su possesses the vow to subdue the demon crowds so that he may save beings without being controlled by the demons himself. Yet, this vow is so immense that he has extended his subduing of the demon crowds all the way into the Dharma Realm. 'No matter how great Practitioner Su’s vow may be, without the help of Namo Amituofo, how could he possibly have the power to subdue the demon crowds throughout the entire Dharma Realm? How could this be achieved without the leadership of Namo Amituofo?' Initially, this is how we comforted ourselves, but it now appears to be the truth. Eventually, Namo Amituofo truly empowered Practitioner Su, granting him the ability to subdue the demon crowds with the Twelve Lights. This is the inner voice of many of us in the demon realms."
"Whenever we demon crowds hear Practitioner Su’s voice, we still feel a sense of trembling fear! There is a reason for this. His voice is so powerful because he has performed for countless beings and demon crowds; all these events are encapsulated within his voice and his merits. Otherwise, how could the demon crowds be so easily struck with terror just by hearing his voice?"
The Test of the Fourfold Assembly
"It is quite strange, however, that you, the fourfold assembly, do not seem to fear his voice. His voice is capable of subduing the demons within your own bodies—some of which are great demons, ancient demons, and old demons whose 'age' is on par with our own. Let me share a little secret: this is not a bad thing. Only those who can withstand the tests of the demon crowds will be able to stand firm in the future of the Buddha’s teachings."
"Although you are currently aware of the 'age' of one ancient or old demon after another, in reality, they have a vast number of powerful demon kings, sons, and grandsons under their command. Yet, Practitioner Su is still able to subdue such a massive force of ancient and old demons. We know Practitioner Su’s true strength; the grand arrays of these ancient and old demons are still no match for him."
A Journey from the Deep Sea
"Speaking of this, I have not yet mentioned how I was sent into the Western Land of Dharma Nature, have I? I heard the previous account from the demon Magic Rong regarding that great explosion in the Dharma Realm. He was not shaken and remained in samadhi in his original space. I was not so fortunate; I was cast into the deep sea of another planet to enter samadhi."
"It was a rather unique planet with a vast oceanic space. Originally, I was at the bottom of the sea, and no one could have known of my existence. However, after two thousand trillion years, the crust shifted and the volume of seawater decreased—a common occurrence on such planets. As the ocean turned from deep to shallow, they discovered the landmass where I resided. It was very unique, different from the rest of their planet’s terrain. Later, they discovered that there was still life within that landmass. Although I was in samadhi, a very faint life force remained, and I was discovered."
Forced Out of Hiding
"In truth, being discovered was fine; I could have simply remained motionless. But they insisted on calling me out. I did not want to emerge, thinking they could do nothing to me. To my surprise, they used fire attacks to break open my space. Because the surrounding temperature became extremely high, I had no choice but to leave that space. This is the violent way the demon crowds operate—they stop at nothing to achieve their goals. They burned the landmass with fire just to force me out."
"I came out, and that was that. Once I emerged, I terrified them. They had likely never seen such an ancient demon on their planet. After they questioned me in detail, I revealed my situation. I am an ancient demon with an 'age' of 7,830 trillion years—three times the age of their planet! This drew their intense attention, and they listed me as an 'ancestral demon,' hoping I could help them survive their current catastrophe. Since I had already broken my samadhi, I had to face what I needed to face. Having hidden for so long, and having survived the great explosion of the Dharma Realm, it was time for a conclusion! Thus, I accepted their request with a calm heart."
The Legend of Practitioner Su
"Now, they have encountered the figure of Practitioner Su. After hearing their descriptions of Practitioner Su’s deeds—how he turned demon palaces into nothingness in the Demon Realm, and how he caused many old and ancient demons to vanish in an instant or never return from the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre—I understood the situation. I believe any demon of the ancestral rank, upon hearing this, would know that this is something only possible if a Buddha has come into the world. They thought this was a more sophisticated ancient demon from Earth coming to discipline them, to conquer the demon crowds in the Dharma Realm and strengthen its own influence on Earth. But a human capable of subduing so many ancient and old demons is no ordinary person."
"They wanted to use 'magic' against Practitioner Su. I warned them, 'Practitioner Su is no ordinary figure! If you use magic against him, there may be terrifying consequences.' In truth, we ancestral demons have an understanding of the laws of karma and cause and effect. To protect myself, I had no choice but to enter a deep meditative state. However, these younger generations of demons do not yet understand the terror of . Even though I told them, they simply would not listen."
The Reach of Magic and the Power of the Buddha
"In the Dharma Realm space where we reside, my abilities allow me to receive messages from Earth; that is to say, my power can penetrate from the Dharma Realm all the way to Earth. Similarly, if I were to use 'magic' in the Dharma Realm, that power could penetrate countless spaces to reach Earth and act upon Practitioner Su. This is the difference in the nature of 'magic.' Some powers are limited to a few planets, while others can penetrate to distant spaces. However, I must report to Practitioner Su: those who can use magic against you and make you feel that a demon is attacking are no 'little demons.' At the very least, it requires a very skilled demon king. Therefore, it is understandable that their power can penetrate space to reach Earth."
"Young planets and demon crowds do not yet recognize the Buddha, and demons of two thousand trillion years likely do not know the Buddha well either. Some luckier demons have the chance to encounter the Buddha. Especially in the Dharma Realm, why is Namo Amituofo called the 'Universal Buddha'? Because the Dharma Realm is vast, and all are beings with karmic affinity to be saved by Namo Amituofo. This includes me; I have a slight understanding of the Buddha. Therefore, I advised the demons of that planet not to use magic against Practitioner Su. These demons did not listen, and they specifically targeted Practitioner Su’s eyes."
The Consequence of Blindness
"I told them that I could hear the content of Practitioner Su’s Dharma talks. I have the magical power to penetrate space, and I could hear that during the Dharma assembly, when Practitioner Su was chanting Namo Amituofo and giving teachings, he said that if one uses magic to attack his eyes, the karmic retribution would be blindness—a life of darkness. This is no small matter!"
"If a demon loses its eyes, how can it continue to be a demon? Wouldn't that be equivalent to being crippled? I asked them, 'Do you not know that using magic will result in the retribution of blindness?' Some laughed, and others were arrogant, saying, 'Does what the Buddha says count?' I replied, 'What the Buddha says counts! If the Buddha’s words do not count, then whose words could possibly count?' They still believed their own words counted. I thought to myself, 'You truly do not know the height of the heavens or the depth of the earth.' Later, I ignored them. Although I appeared in their space, I stopped speaking. If my eyes saw naturally, then they saw; if they did not, that was fine. If my ears heard naturally, then they heard; if they did not, that was fine. But my heart did not stir with thoughts. I possess this skill, this meditative concentration."
A New Beginning in the Western Land
"Later, I saw those demons who used magic against Practitioner Su being discovered by him. Does Practitioner Su not often say, 'I see you are using magic against me'? They were among that group. Sure enough, not long after, Practitioner Su struck the qing; the sound reached our Dharma Realm—a very powerful, shocking sound that we could all hear. At the same time, Practitioner Su’s countless manifestations arrived, and the light they emitted directly brought us into the Western Land of Dharma Nature. It was so swift. Once you step into the Western Land of Dharma Nature, your life in the Demon Realm reaches its conclusion. Your spirit enters another space, and your life begins anew."
"At this moment, the demons in the Western Land of Dharma Nature no longer look like demons. Demons originally carry a dark, dull light, but now, everyone has a bright radiance, and there are smiles on their faces. To be honest, such a wonderful place is a luxury for us demons! We have committed so many evil deeds and hurt so many people, yet we still receive such excellent treatment. The Buddha is truly of great , bearing no grudges and not looking at our past."
"We have committed so many evil acts; although all of this is in the past, the laws of karma and cause and effect still remain! I am truly, infinitely grateful to the Buddha. Only the Buddha possesses such a mind-capacity. Otherwise, whenever people hear the word 'demon,' they gnash their teeth in hatred, fearing any association with them, because dealing with demons brings no benefit and one might even be harmed—this is the common view of demons. Being described this way, we have nothing to say, for the truth of the matter is indeed so!"
"However, once a demon encounters the Buddha, everything changes. The Buddha has the means to subdue the demon crowds. In this manifestation by Practitioner Su, he won through speed—it was too fast, far too fast! One must practice in this way to be able to save beings. If you are slow and sluggish, by the time you reach where the beings are, they have already been taken away by the demon crowds. Then, who can you say you are saving? Therefore, the Buddha’s speed must be faster than the demons’ to be able to save beings. This is a fact. Thus, Practitioner Su’s speed is exceptionally fast; in the Buddha’s teachings, this is called the 'Divine Foot,' and it is indeed a divine foot, perfectly in accordance with reality." Namo Amituofo."
"Yet, you humans—why is it that when Practitioner Su speaks of his capabilities, you choose not to believe? The facts are right before your eyes; this is neither deception nor hypocrisy. It is a great pity that you do not believe. If you do not believe, you will not enter the temple. Everyone who enters the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre does so because they have a karmic connection with , with this temple, with Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, with Practitioner Su, and even with the fourfold assembly of disciples. Therefore, I ask every member of the fourfold assembly to cherish this human body. 'True Cultivation'—using the false to cultivate the true—is absolutely necessary. Without this, it is impossible to awaken to one's true nature and achieve success. To be honest, the demon crowds understand the practitioners on Earth very well. By simply observing your and the fifty-one mental factors, they can discern exactly what kind of person you are, and how to interfere with or obstruct your practice, preventing you from flourishing or making progress.
The Call for Mutual Support
Therefore, regarding the practice of the fourfold assembly at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, I ask the demon crowds residing in the Western Land of Dharma Nature to lend a hand. Help drive away those demon crowds that interfere with their practice; only then will there be successors like Practitioner Su who can continue to save the demon crowds.
In the Western Land of Dharma Nature, the lessons assigned to us by Practitioner Su involve listening to the Dharma talks. I have discovered that listening to Practitioner Su’s teachings is a true pleasure. I admit that my own Wisdom is insufficient; Practitioner Su possesses a profound brilliance, and this is precisely his ability to subdue the demon crowds.
The Guardians of Earth
Within the vastness of the Dharma Realm, there is the cycle of reincarnation, along with countless planets, beings, and primordial demons. Earth is a planet blessed with significant fortune. Many ancient spirits still protect it—these are the ancestral spirits of the Earth, particularly those of the Chinese land. They remain within the space of Earth and China, guarding that territory, including the generals, soldiers, and even the horses from ancient battlefields and frontier outposts. In truth, they are trapped within that space, unable to emerge, likely waiting for Chao Du. We have observed that the Buddha-light of Amitabha Buddha and the of Practitioner Su have opened countless spaces within Earth and China, rescuing many beings and spirits trapped within.
The Rarity of the Fragrant Light
Although it is natural for us, as demon crowds who have existed for trillions of years, to traverse space—otherwise we could not enter deep subterranean or underwater spaces to enter samadhi—this is merely a form of self-rescue. Ultimately, self-rescue is insufficient; we must wait for the Buddha to save us.
To be honest, the space occupied by the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is incredibly rare and precious. Because Amitabha Buddha is here, because Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju and Practitioner Su are here, and because the Western Land of Dharma Nature is here, it has already accepted immeasurable and boundless beings and demon crowds, helping them attain salvation so they no longer need to enter the cycle of reincarnation or be pulled away by the forces of karmic retribution and evil.
The Power of the Written Word
To explain the affairs of this space clearly requires great skill. We can see it, but for you, it must be described. This, however, is the power of the written word.
The transmission of information at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is exceptionally clear and rapid, which means that the Dharma spoken by Practitioner Su at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre can reach the vastness of the Dharma Realm. We, the demon crowds, can also listen to the teachings of Amitabha Buddha. Therefore, the demon crowds must respect Practitioner Su. You in the human world should also believe in and respect Practitioner Su! We have also heard that demons possess a true self; it is merely covered up by their demon nature, unable to be expressed. Practitioner Su, however, has manifested his true self within a human body, and with the help of the Buddha, he possesses the Wisdom to save the demon crowds.
Karmic Connections and Universal Principles
Many things are governed by and the causes and effects. The new chairs and tables I see at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre were destined to be brought here from the moment they were manufactured. They must have had a karmic connection with the temple long ago to have the opportunity to enter. Just as we, who have been subdued by Amitabha Buddha and Practitioner Su and sent to the Western Land of Dharma Nature, must have had karmic connections with Amitabha Buddha, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, or Practitioner Su in our past lives! This is the law of karmic conditions and the causes and effects; it is also the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
You all have great , which is why you were able to have your gathering last week. From the Land of Dharma Nature, we watched you eating so happily; it was quite interesting, and we were happy to see it too. In truth, the demon crowds also have an innocent side, but when we are discovered, we must manifest the appearance of a demon to look like one, otherwise, we would be looked down upon.
Cherishing the Precious Dharma
Every event that occurs at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is extremely precious and contains the Buddha’s teachings. You have received such a rare treasure; you should use it well. For instance, the Western Land of Dharma Nature can save the beings within your own bodies and help you transform karma. Yet, some of you are still led by these beings, allowing them to remain within your bodies, seeking revenge and causing you to suffer.
Our lives after arriving in the Western Land of Dharma Nature are much better than before. It was Amitabha Buddha and Practitioner Su who saved us, sending us into the Land of Dharma Nature in massive numbers. The Land of Dharma Nature will never be full, because Practitioner Su’s mind-capacity is so vast, so boundless, that the Land of Dharma Nature is also boundless. The beings within your bodies and those saved by Practitioner Su all have a place to go in the Land of Dharma Nature, and they can even enter the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss—this is what I have heard here recently. This means that we, too, can make a vow to go to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. I never imagined we would have such a day.
We, the demon crowds, are actually very intelligent; it is just that we previously only learned magic. Now that we have arrived in the Land of Dharma Nature, we are already learning the Buddha’s teachings. In the future, we can join the salvation team to save beings, to compensate for the evil deeds we committed in the past. This is the heartfelt wish of our group of demon crowds.
I am grateful to you all.
