Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provides this profound guidance on the nature of confusion and how it obstructs our spiritual journey.
Confusion is synonymous with afflictions. When confusion arises, afflictions follow, and the Three Poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance manifest. This is the very root of all suffering. You must be cautious, for this is the greatest danger in your practice. You must strive to distance yourself from confusion.
Why is this so critical? When you are under the influence of confusion, , or spiritual attachment, your perception becomes clouded. You may misinterpret the expressions, tone, actions, or attitudes of others—or even those of your own body. This leads to:
All of these are forms of pollution that obstruct your practice, hindering your purification and preventing your mind from remaining clear and bright.
Do not allow confusion to manifest before you. When confusion takes hold, you are easily led astray by your Six Roots, sensory , and wandering thoughts. This leads to:
When you have this awareness, you must immediately return to the right path. Do not let confusion continue to pollute and obstruct your heart.
The most important task is to transform your heart and your thoughts. You must diligently grasp the Buddha-name, chanting 24/7 without interruption. This skill is the essential method for protecting your life and ensuring your rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. It is also the primary force for the purification of your Body-Mind-Spirit.
Since it is difficult to resist the weight of confusion and karma through your own strength alone, you must seek the Buddha's blessings through diligent practice. We hope to purify our own hearts, as well as the hearts of the , spirits, and demon crowds residing within us. By removing confusion and severing afflictions, you will be able to resist the interference of karma and confusion. This will resolve the distress in your heart and allow you to continue moving forward on the Buddha's path.
