Before this mission is fulfilled, the teacher must possess a clear understanding of the path ahead, which requires the virtue of patience—the ability to wait for the right moment and the right person to carry the torch forward.
The teacher wishes to pass on all the experience and wisdom they have gathered to the next generation. This is done with the hope that these teachings will be put into practice and carried forward through the ages. By doing so, more beings can receive the benefits of the , undergo , and achieve rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. This allows them to leave suffering behind immediately and never again be trapped in the cycle of pain.
A true teacher understands the spiritual capacity of all beings. They perceive the level of purification each person has attained and can discern whether a student’s past and present situations align with the requirements of this specific Dharma path. The teacher knows clearly that they must wait for the one who is truly ready to receive the transmission.
What are the qualities required for one to carry on the Pure Land teachings? A successor must be purified and clear in their practice. They must embody the following virtues:
