The Danger of Compromise in Spiritual Practice

The Relentless Whirlpool of

The reason why it is so difficult for beings to escape the cycle of being reincarnated is that the power of karma acts like a powerful, relentless whirlpool. Once you draw near to this vortex, you are inevitably pulled into its depths. You are then spun around by the momentum of your own karma, and in that state, no one can rescue another. It is a solitary and perilous journey through the darkness of the cycle of being reincarnated.

The Illusion of Curiosity

Perhaps you do not yet understand the true terror of this whirlpool, or perhaps you underestimate its destructive power. It is also possible that you are not unaware of the danger, but rather, you have become mesmerised by the alluring shapes and forms that the whirlpool casts out. You begin to compromise with your own true nature, thinking, "I will just go a little closer to take a look." Yet, the moment you draw near, you lose the strength to resist. You are instantly pulled into the vortex, and your presence is lost to the depths.

Recognising the Opposing Voice

You must never be deceived by external environments, and you must never compromise with the opposing voices that arise from within your own heart and mind. What do we mean by an opposing voice? It refers to any behaviour, speech, or stray thought that contradicts the or the rules of conduct you have committed to uphold. These deviations are all seeds of a negative cause, and they will inevitably lead to the ripening of evil consequences.

The Necessity of Unwavering Vigilance

If you know that an action is wrong, you must keep your distance and never commit it. Do not compromise because you wish to relax your discipline, and do not compromise out of a sense of idle curiosity. Do not compromise simply because you want to loosen the constraints you have placed upon yourself. In a single moment, in the blink of an eye, a negative cause can be sown, and the bitter fruit of suffering will surely follow. You must be extremely cautious and vigilant at all times. Practise with sincerity and keep your mind focused on the path of liberation.
