Bearing the Suffering of All Beings at All Times, Thus Inviting the Presence of Amitabha Buddha
Heart, Vows, and Actions Follow Amitabha, Spreading Throughout Space and the Dharma Realm
Recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe. On the twenty-seventh of January, 2024, during the first session of the , Teacher-Practitioner Xia Lianju provided these profound teachings on the nature of arrogance.
Arrogance is one of the —Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt. It acts as a potent toxin that poisons the human heart. When this poison takes root, it fills the mind with a suffocating energy that is difficult to dispel. This toxic energy does not merely linger within; it radiates outward, interfering with and causing harm to those around us. However, the most profound and lasting damage is always inflicted upon oneself.
Unless one encounters a person of high spiritual quality, deep , and great wisdom, the arrogant person remains trapped in their own delusions. A truly wise person, even when sensing the arrogance in another's words, attitudes, or actions, will still respond with compassionate tolerance. They understand the suffering that drives such behaviour.
The arrogant person often believes they possess certain advantages or talents that make them superior to others. They fall into the trap of thinking they are better than everyone else. They fail to realise the ancient truth: there is always someone better; there is always a higher authority. This narrow-mindedness becomes a significant barrier to one's own growth, making it exceptionally difficult to elevate the quality of one's spirit.
Arrogance is not merely a fleeting mood; it is a deeply ingrained aspect of one's personality. It is said that the arrogant shall fail. Why is this so? It is because the world is constantly changing, and there will inevitably be rising stars who possess greater virtue, skill, or wisdom to take one's place. It is often only at this moment of being surpassed that the arrogant person experiences a profound realisation. They finally taste the bitterness of failure, which serves as a harsh but necessary lesson to help them recognise their own mistakes.
If an arrogant person truly wishes to change their ways, the transformation will be visible to all. One will begin to see them:
When one changes in this way, others will naturally feel happy to draw near and learn from them. This is what it means to truly change one's ways. Such a transformation does more than just help one's own practice progress; it is a clear sign that one is finally able to take charge of their own life.
When you are the master of your own mind, you are no longer controlled by , attached spirits, or even the influence of demon crowds. Only by reaching this state of self-mastery can one find the genuine opportunity to grow, change, and advance steadily along the path of practice. Namo Amituofo.
