In the lineage of masters and disciples, the secret to receiving the true transmission of the lies in the practice of listening. To learn the Buddha's way, one must also know how to listen, for this is the only way to receive the greatest benefits of the practice.
When we speak of listening, we do not mean merely hearing sounds with our ears. It is a profound state of receptivity. If you wish to truly understand the Dharma, you must learn to set aside your own ego-attachment, your subjective views, and your personal opinions. These are the barriers that prevent the light of wisdom from entering your heart.
When you have no personal attachments, no subjective views, and no fixed notions, you are finally ready to listen. You must listen to the teachings of the Buddha, the Bodhisattvas, and your true spiritual friend, and then simply put those teachings into practice without hesitation.
In our current circumstances, the most important focus for your learning is this: listen and obey. This is akin to having complete faith, accepting the teachings, and putting them into action. There must be no room for doubt. During the process of your practice, if you find that you are not listening, it is a sign that the ego is still present. Where there is ego, there is impurity. Where there is and no impurity, there is a wonderful, refreshing clarity.
Listening must be manifested in your daily behaviour. The primary way to demonstrate this is by strictly observing the various rules and regulations of the centre. This is especially vital for those engaged in practice. You must be willing to follow the group and act in harmony with the monastic community. This unity is the most important factor in maintaining the stability and proper functioning of our spiritual home.
If one acts against these rules, violates the , or disrupts the peace of the community, it causes others to lose their focus and disturbs their hearts. This is a serious transgression. If you find yourself in such a position, you must change your ways immediately and ensure that such actions do not continue. By aligning your heart with the collective, you protect the Dharma and ensure that the path remains clear for all beings.
