The Twelfth Letter of the Late Venerable Master Wei Chueh
Recorded on June 28, 2017
This is a record of a message from the late Venerable Master Wei Chueh, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his realisation after passing. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fa Xi, on June 28, 2017.
Venerable Master Wei Chueh speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am the late Venerable Master Wei Chueh. This is the twelfth letter I have sent to those who still walk the path of the living. I have traversed the most severe hells and witnessed the most magnificent Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Having walked both paths, I have only one question for all of you: If you cannot reach the Western Pure Land, then what have you truly cultivated in this life?"
The Illusion of Institutional Success
"The vastness of the Chung Tai Chan Monastery was, in its own way, quite impressive. There were many monastics and lay practitioners who cultivated with sincerity. But if one spends an entire lifetime believing that their cultivation is 'good enough,' that is a dangerous delusion. You will still be taken away by the forces of . And who takes you away? You are taken away by your own attachments!
The strength of Chung Tai was built upon the collective efforts of everyone. Without all of you, there would be no Chung Tai. To all the fourfold assembly of disciples of Chung Tai, Namo Amituofo. I am your old master, Wei Chueh, the one who once stood at the helm of that institution. How many of you have wept or smiled in my presence? I was once the master you relied upon, but now, I am merely an object of your rituals. Is this disparity not terrifying?"
The Reality of Death and Rebirth
"Yet, this day—the day of death—will come for every single one of you. I only wish to ask: Have you prepared for your rebirth in the Western Pure Land? It is only now, from this vantage point, that I truly see the gravity of the situation. In my life, I was ignorant. I dabbled in politics and became entangled in the pursuit of fame and profit. But it is well that I have seen the truth now.
To all the monastics, politicians, business leaders, celebrities, lay practitioners, and the general public—please, listen to the words of Wei Chueh. If you wish to be free from the sickness of the cycle of rebirth, come to this place. If you wish to understand how to prepare for a peaceful and liberated rebirth, this place can tell you clearly. Do not harbour doubts any longer. Face the truth with an open heart."
The Path to
"I can tell you clearly: 'It is the heart that makes the Buddha, and it is the heart that is the Buddha.' If you wish to achieve true liberation, you must come here, for there is an awakened being here who can help you realise your true nature. I, Wei Chueh, solemnly urge the public: no matter what you seek in this life—be it health, wealth, beauty, fame, or grand houses—these are your choices, and that is fine. But do not forget to seek a good death.
Here, I have been transformed, and I wait for you all. If even one person is willing to appear and open the door to the Buddha’s teachings, the merit will be immeasurable. Namo Amituofo."
