The Fourteenth Letter
A letter from mother, Lay Practitioner Zhao Liangyu, to Venerable Ding Hong regarding the Assembly.
August 29, 2017
To my son, Venerable Ding Hong,
It is said that by subduing the demon's vow, one attains the subtle and wonderful Dharma. Over the past two weeks, I have truly witnessed at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre how Practitioner Su is able to subdue the Demon Realm. The secret lies in nothing other than —an endless, boundless compassion. In this state, demons and Buddhas are seen as being of the same essence, without any discrimination; they are treated with the same level of respect and care.
During my time in this world, I visited many temples and participated in numerous Dharma Assemblies. However, I have rarely encountered a situation where one could truly know whether their family members had successfully been saved and reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Often, even the masters who lead the ceremony are uncertain of the outcome. In the past, I felt my own body becoming increasingly heavy, yet I did not understand the underlying reasons for this burden. To truly study the Buddha’s teachings, one must be lively and natural. We must strive to rediscover the pure, kind, and original nature within ourselves. When we achieve this, we gain the ability to communicate across different dimensions of space, clearly foresee the past, present, and future, and restore the clarity of the five eyes, allowing us to perceive the truth of existence. We can then truly help our release their past hatred and provide them with the opportunity to walk the path of Buddhahood.
I have come to realise that Chao Du is not a simple task; it requires the perfect alignment of many conditions. In many diverse temples today, it is often said that it is easy to invite a god, but hard to send one away. It is a great pity that many people do not understand the true reality of Chao Du.
Practitioner Su of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre possesses a heart of immense compassion and an infinite mind-capacity. This sincerity has moved to personally lead the way. The Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, the patriarchs and venerable masters, and the Avatamsaka divine beings all reside at the temple to support this grand undertaking. Together, they assist the beings of the spirit realm throughout the entire Dharma Realm to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Practitioner Su’s mind-capacity is truly boundless. She hopes that all juniors who follow in these footsteps—those who are dedicated to the inheritance of the Buddha’s teachings, the true power of Chao Du, and the salvation of the world—can all attain this great cultivation. Her wish is to see this wisdom blossom everywhere, filling every corner with the fragrance of the lotus. Her painstaking efforts and deep intentions are truly worthy of our highest praise.
My son, if you still do not know to come here to uncover these treasures and engage in deep study, it would be a great loss. As for whether you are here to see your mother off on the path to the Western Pure Land, that is no longer important. You have far more significant responsibilities to shoulder. You must summon your boldness, learn this great cultivation, and truly succeed in helping all beings. Only by doing so can you achieve the goal of benefiting both the living and the deceased. This is the true path of a practitioner.
