The term 'Humble Monk' is a traditional, modest way for those within the Buddha’s gate to refer to themselves. In this context, 'poverty' does not refer to material lack, but rather to a profound sense of 'insufficiency.' Regardless of one's level of practice, the depth of one's skills, or even if one has already attained the state of an awakened being, a true practitioner will always feel that their practice and their virtue remain insufficient. This is the living example and verbal teaching that our patriarchs and venerable masters have used for generations to guide those who follow in their footsteps with .
As students of the Buddha, you must remember that true progress only comes when you apply your heart to the most subtle aspects of your daily life. It is in these quiet, often overlooked moments that you will find the clarity needed to gain genuine insight. A humble monk often wishes to remain hidden, yet their presence is difficult to conceal. This is because they have cultivated the skills necessary to save beings. Wherever they go, those who are suffering are able to find relief and salvation through their presence.
You should take this opportunity to reflect deeply upon your own journey. Ask yourself honestly:
If you find that you have become lazy or stagnant, you must awaken immediately. Do not allow yourself to continue in this state of complacency. Instead, rise up with urgency and press forward on the path.
Before one reaches the state of an awakened being, one is constantly controlled by the forces of impermanence and karma. It is difficult to be the master of one's own life when these forces hold sway. You must recognise the suffering inherent in this cycle. By working to break free from the shackles of impermanence and karma, you will finally be able to realise your true nature. This is the only way to truly leave suffering behind and find happiness. .
