You must put in the work in this very lifetime. If you do so, your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss can be successfully achieved.

The Peril of Wasted Time

Do not wait until your life is over to realise you have lost your human body. If you fail to practise now, you may find yourself as a wandering spirit, lost and without a place to rest. For hundreds or even thousands of years, you might remain without the affinity to be saved. In the end, you would be left only with regret, sighing in the emptiness of your own making.
