During the and the Noon Offering, we are reminded that the true value of the Buddha’s teachings lies in their plainness and reality. To understand this, we must look at two fundamental concepts: plainness and reality. Plainness is the ability to see the extraordinary within the ordinary. Reality is the ability to perceive the ultimate truth within what is real. Whether you can derive the true benefits of the depends entirely on your ability to understand what it truly means to be plain and real.
True plainness is not a state of mediocrity, but a state of profound spiritual clarity. It is characterised by the following qualities:
True reality is the practice of living in accordance with the natural order, free from the burdens of greed and unnecessary desire. We can cultivate this reality in our daily lives through simple, mindful actions:
It is inevitable that you will encounter obstacles, misunderstandings, or unfavourable environments. You may find that others treat you poorly, or that your circumstances change in ways that feel overwhelming. However, you must not let these external factors cause you to become discouraged, weak, or to abandon your practice. You must remember that all beings are currently trapped by and are struggling within the cycle of reincarnated life. By maintaining a steady heart, you can transcend these difficulties.
To reach the state of an awakened being, you must return to this true plainness and reality. It is a return to your original nature, stripped of the layers of ego and desire that have obscured it for so long. By choosing to practise these teachings, you will find the strength to navigate the world with a clear mind and a compassionate heart.
