The Source of Human Suffering

Where do the actions of the human world truly originate? They arise from the interplay of and conditions, manifesting within a world of illusions. We are constantly pulled by the past and the future, our thoughts never truly resting, and we remain trapped, rolling endlessly within the fruits of our own cycle of rebirth. The torrential river of karma flows without ceasing, carrying us along in its wake. How can one escape such profound suffering? The wise person knows that the solution lies in adjusting the heart.

All pain and suffering originate within the mind. You must recognise that this illusory mind is the very source of your karma. When you understand this truth, you can begin to extinguish the attachments of the mind. If the mind is stilled, the suffering that stems from it will also vanish. However, when we awaken our , the suffering becomes manifest. Physical pain is merely the suffering of , but if the mind recognises this suffering, it must learn to depart from it. The fundamental practice is to cease creating the causes of suffering altogether.

The Path of Stillness and Liberation

The Buddha's path is free from suffering; it is cool, refreshing, and serene. Leaving suffering behind and finding happiness is the true state of freedom. To achieve this, you must learn to see through the illusions of this world and let go of your attachments. Engage in diligent practice, resolve your karmic knots, and help all beings reach the . The Buddha's path is direct and unswerving. It requires a mind without selfishness, without attachment, and without wandering thoughts. This state of being is the true manifestation of an awakened being.

Embodying the Buddha-Heart

To walk this path, one must cultivate the essential qualities of the Buddha-heart:

  • : A heart that feels the pain of others and seeks to alleviate it.
  • Wisdom: The clear insight that sees through the nature of reality.
  • Mind-capacity: A vast, open heart that can encompass all beings.
  • Tolerance: The patience to endure and forgive, allowing for harmony to flourish.

An awakened being enters the world to perform the work of salvation, saving infinite beings so they may leave suffering behind. This is the Buddha-heart that we must follow. The Forty-eight Great Vows of Namo Amituofo are active in this world, and saving all beings by guiding them to the Western Pure Land is the ultimate Buddha-vow. Saving beings without rest is the true expression of Buddha-actions. If you can live in this way, the Buddha's path is accomplished.
