Countless beings are currently drifting and sinking within the vast, turbulent ocean of karma. This ocean is deep and dark, filled with the heavy weight of our past actions, thoughts, and intentions. Most beings are completely submerged, lost in the currents of their own making, unable to find a way to the surface. However, there are some who, amidst this constant rising and falling, manage to break through the surface of the water for a brief moment. In that fleeting instant of clarity, if they are fortunate enough to encounter the ship of the sailing past, they have a chance for salvation. If they can summon the strength to call out the name of with a sincere heart, they will be rescued, brought onto the ship, and finally leave the ocean of karma behind to journey toward the Western Pure Land.
The Danger of Being Swallowed by Karma
Conversely, if a being is currently being swallowed by the ocean of karma, sinking so deep that they are no longer visible, their situation becomes dire. Even if the ship of the Western Pure Land is sailing nearby, it is impossible to rescue those who are completely submerged. This includes those who have forgotten the practice of chanting the Buddha's name, or those who were once beings of the Western Pure Land but have allowed themselves to sink back into the depths of samsara. If this sinking becomes the root cause of one's continued cycle of rebirth, and if that root cause is not removed, then the cycle of reincarnation will never cease. It will continue, life after life, in an endless loop of suffering.
The Root Causes of Spiritual Decline
If a practitioner begins to sink during their spiritual journey, failing to make progress and instead regressing, they must act immediately. If this regression is not halted in time, they will inevitably sink into the ocean of karma, and the possibility of realising their true nature will vanish. The primary causes of this spiritual sinking are arrogance and the breaking of the . These actions invite negative karma to manifest, making it impossible for one to remain in control of their own mind. Often, those who sink have not truly repented, have not changed their ways, and have failed to seek the assistance of a true spiritual friend. If one insists on sinking, even if their physical body is present at a sacred Buddha-land, their heart and spirit are not focused on the practice of the Pure Land. They lack the vow to save themselves and to help other beings reach the Western Pure Land, and thus, they are not truly a practitioner of the Pure Land path.
The Path of Repentance and Renewal at Hsiang Kuang
At Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, if a being who has been sinking experiences a sudden moment of clarity—a turning of the light inward—they can see the many evils they have committed in the past. They may feel deep shame and regret for having failed to truly repent and change their ways before the Buddha. Now, finding themselves sinking and unable to rise, they must take the following steps:

By following this path with a sincere and unwavering heart, one can rise from the depths of the ocean of karma and find the way home. Namo Amituofo.
