Bearing the Suffering of All Beings at All Times, Thus Inviting the Presence of Amitabha Buddha
Heart, Vows, and Actions Follow Amitabha, Spreading Throughout Space and the Dharma Realm
During the , as we invite the spirits to join us in the assembly, we contemplate the nature of our existence. offers these teachings to help us understand the true meaning of returning home.
Consider the dust that fills the sky, drifting aimlessly with the wind. It dances in the air, only to fall and settle wherever the breeze dictates. It has no fixed destination, no permanent home. If you were to ask the dust where it belongs, it might reply in the blink of an eye that everywhere is its home, yet nowhere is its true home. This is the nature of the wandering soul in the cycle of rebirth.
Think of the butterfly, spreading its wings to dance amongst the flowers. It flits from one cluster to another, never staying long. If you ask the butterfly where it is returning, it might laugh and say that it has no specific place of return. Wherever its body lands, that is its home for the moment. Like the butterfly, we often drift through life, mistaking our temporary circumstances for our final destination.
Consider the snowflake, dancing in the icy air. It falls to cover the earth in a blanket of white, only to melt into water and merge with the ground. If you ask the snowflake where it came from or where it is going, it might shrug and say that it comes from water and returns to water. It is free to come and go, for it is always part of the same essence.
Now, consider the practitioner of the Pure Land path. You chant Buddha's name with your lips, but where does your heart truly reside? Into which realm does your mind enter? Often, you claim to seek the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, yet your heart is not truly focused on that goal. Your body is stained by the dust of worldly thoughts, and your mind remains unsettled, tossed about by the winds of desire and confusion.
This is why I counsel you: you must let go of the dust of the world and discard these wandering thoughts. You must focus your heart with absolute sincerity and chant Buddha's name. When you are weary of this aimless wandering, you will finally listen to the truth. When you commit your entire being to diligent practice, you will find your way back to the West.
Within your body, there are many who have followed you through countless lifetimes. They are attached to you, residing within your very being, suffering as you suffer. They, too, are lost in this cycle of rebirth. You may ask, where do they belong? When will they finally return home?
The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is the only true place of return for all beings. This Dharma assembly, and the act of , is the appointed time for their return. Do not let them continue to suffer in this cycle of revenge and karmic debt. By chanting Buddha's name with a pure heart, you invite them to enter the light of the Buddha. That light is the gateway to the Western Pure Land. Let go of the past, embrace the light, and return home together.
