Chanting the name of is the fundamental practice of the Gate. It is the most direct and effective path for any practitioner to return to their original nature. However, in this modern age, many practitioners find it difficult to maintain this practice consistently. Why is this so? It is primarily due to the heavy interference of . When you sit down to chant, do you find your mind wandering? Do you find yourself lost in a sea of delusions and messy thoughts that interrupt your focus? This is a common struggle, and it is precisely why we come together in the bodhimanda for group cultivation. By chanting together, we help one another maintain the right and ensure that our recitation continues without interruption.
Have you ever felt yourself becoming drowsy while chanting? Many people assume that this is simply a sign of physical fatigue or a normal part of the process. However, you should now understand that this is often not merely sleepiness. When your mind is scattered and you fail to concentrate, or when you have not yet transformed your karma, your and attached spirits may manifest. They interfere with your practice and can even lead your spirit to leave your body. You may appear to be falling asleep, but in reality, your spirit has entered another space. This is why it is so vital to remain vigilant and focused during your practice.
When practitioners gather in one place to chant Namo Amituofo with one voice, we create a powerful, unified field of energy. We call each other fellow practitioners because we are cultivating together, supporting one another through the process of purification. This is the essence of the Pure Land method of group cultivation. As we chant together, we use the sound of the Buddha's name to focus our minds and gather our scattered spirits. This collective resonance acts as a protective shield, helping us to stay on the right path and preventing the interference of external forces.
When you chant with a sincere heart and a pure mind, the power of your recitation extends far beyond yourself. This pure, virtuous heart has the capacity to save the karmic creditors and attached spirits residing within your own body, and even the demon crowds that may be present. By chanting together, we all receive the purification of the Buddha's name. This process allows those who have been suffering to wash away their past impurities and give rise to goodness. It is a profound act of that benefits not only the practitioner but all beings connected to them.
Diligent practice is the embodiment of the Three Learnings of , Samadhi, and Wisdom. It is the wonderful method that allows us to uphold the precepts, attain meditative concentration, and awaken our innate wisdom.
