Bearing the Suffering of All Beings at All Times, Thus Inviting the Presence of Amitabha Buddha
Heart, Vows, and Actions Follow Amitabha, Spreading Throughout Space and the Dharma Realm
During the , we gather to reflect on the essence of our practice. Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers these profound teachings on the nature of the vow, which serves as the foundation for every practitioner of the path.
Vows are the primary driving force behind your spiritual progress. The depth of your vow, whether shallow or profound, lies entirely within your heart. When you make a vow, you are realising your original intent to return to your true nature. To sustain this journey, you must rely on the three essential provisions of the Pure Land path: Faith, Vows, and Practice.
As a disciple of the Buddha, have you truly made your vows? Have you integrated them into your heart so that they guide every step you take? Perhaps you have made a vow but have not yet put it into action. It is vital that you do not fall easily while walking this path. When obstacles and tests appear in your life, do not view them as setbacks. Instead, recognise them as opportunities to observe your mind and refine your practice. Breaking through these challenges is how you move forward; the struggle itself is the critical moment of transformation.
Whether you are progressing or retreating is a test of the sincerity of your vow. To retreat is to fall back into the cycle of being reincarnated. However, every step forward brings you closer to the Land of the Golden Lotus. You must ensure that every vow you make is in sync with the Forty-eight Great Vows of Amitabha. Carry these vows with you in every action you take; this is how a true child of the Pure Land should live. Saving yourself and becoming an awakened being is the priority, but you must also join together with others to save all beings and save the world. This teaching was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
