The Profound Benefits of Practising Silence
Teachings from Venerable KaiLin
Recorded on August 10, 2019
The Stillness of the Mind
August 10, 2019. After observing a period of silence, have you noticed how your thoughts have become significantly more tranquil? When we cease the constant chatter of daily life, the tendency to engage in idle gossip diminishes rapidly. Conflicts, which often arise from misunderstandings in our speech, find no fertile ground to take root. Because we cannot rely on verbal communication to express our frustrations or impulses, the entire environment becomes much more serene and peaceful. In such a quiet atmosphere, every individual is better able to focus on their own purification and the refinement of their character.
Cultivating Inner Awareness
Perhaps you still find yourself occasionally slipping into the habit of using words to communicate. Do not be discouraged; this is simply a part of the process. It is a continuous opportunity to train your awareness. By observing these moments, you can see whether you are being led by your old habits and conditioned responses. This is the beginning of true self-mastery. Start your practice with silence, and you will find that it helps you cultivate a keen, sensitive awareness. You will begin to perceive the needs and thoughts of others through subtle observation rather than relying on spoken words. This heightened sensitivity is of immense help when you are eventually tasked with the work of receiving beings and guiding them toward the .
The Precious Opportunity at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre
This practice is not about forcing everyone to stop talking; rather, it is about cherishing the time you have here in Australia. There is no place more pure or free from worry than Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Here, you need only focus on the constant work of purification and changing yourself. In the secular world, the temptations are far too strong. It is nearly impossible to reflect upon your own heart and thoughts in the midst of such chaos, as you are constantly being pulled away by external influences. This is precisely why temples and places of practice are established far away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds.
Taking Responsibility for Your Own
Do not fall into the trap of thinking that every moment spent here is a waste of time or that you have nothing to do. If you feel this way, it is purely because you are not yet serious about your practice. It means you have not yet honestly faced your own problems, nor have you developed the sincere intention to change. You remain comfortable and attached to the things of the secular world, never considering that time is slipping away, day by day. What you are left with is only emptiness, anxiety, and a physical body that is gradually decaying.
Every single day you spend here, you should be:
- Carefully observing your own state of mind.
- Identifying your personal shortcomings and obstacles.
- Actively working to change your habits and perspectives.
Only by doing this will you gain a deeper understanding of your practice. You will finally comprehend the true benefits and the vital importance of this path, and only then will you know how to speak to other beings with wisdom. Every member of the who walks out of Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre should be transformed in this way. Do not remain stagnant, standing still in the same place! Life does not simply pass by day after day without consequence. Change and Causal Conditions are constantly flowing away with time. If you wish to rely on the help of others to achieve success, you will only find yourself more disappointed. Relying solely upon yourself is the greatest responsibility you can take for your own life.
