The True Meaning of the Precepts
Teachings from Venerable KaiLin

Many people keep their distance from the rules and regulations established by the Buddha. They are deeply afraid that they will be unable to uphold them, thereby creating even greater sins. This fear often causes those who initially have the intention to learn to abandon their path. In truth, this is entirely a misunderstanding and a misconception. The regulations established by the Buddha actually possess profound, deep-seated intentions. If one were to carefully explore and study them one by one, one would discover just how deep the Buddha’s truly is. These guidelines are designed to be easily understood, allowing us to align ourselves, in ways both seen and unseen, with the Universal Principles. One cannot help but admire the depth of the Buddha's wisdom and care.
The Misuse of as Shackles
Today, many people use the Precepts as a tool to judge the words and actions of others, effectively placing a heavy, restrictive shackle upon them. This is especially true for those in the secular world who have not yet thoroughly encountered the Buddha’s teachings. They often hold their own preconceived notions about what Buddhism is, and they apply these rigid impressions to every single Buddhist practitioner. If a practitioner makes even the slightest mistake, these observers are quick to magnify it, criticise it, and slander it. This behaviour has led to a situation where practitioners are unable to share the benefits they have received from the Buddha’s teachings with others, ultimately contributing to the decline of the True Teachings.
In this -Ending Age, there are far too many demonic beings who use the name of the Buddha’s teachings to spread their own messages. This makes it difficult for the world to distinguish between the True Teachings and false, misleading paths. This is precisely why it is so important for Buddhist practitioners to uphold the Precepts. By doing so, we can demonstrate a different, authentic side of Buddhist practice. It is not merely about outward compliance; more importantly, it is about transforming the Precepts into our own every word and action. Only by personally experiencing the benefits and advantages of upholding the Precepts can we remain steady and unswayed in this chaotic era, walking firmly upon the right path.
Protection and Spiritual Mastery
Many of the Precepts are, in fact, designed to protect us from the invasion and interference of external spirits. Only under such conditions do we possess the sufficient capacity and energy to help those who are suffering from such interference. Upholding the Precepts is not only a form of self-protection; it is also a way to manifest the wisdom of Buddhist education. Within the framework of these rules, the complexities of human life are laid bare:
- Human Emotions: We learn to observe and manage our rather than being controlled by them.
- Human Interaction: We learn to communicate with compassion and clarity, avoiding unnecessary conflict.
- Human Thinking: We learn to refine our thoughts, ensuring they remain aligned with the Truth.
Everything depends on whether you can subdue the inner demon known as your habits. By doing so, you become the true master of your own body. You will be able to conquer the inner obstacles, achieve your spiritual goals, and walk the path of . Namo Amituofo.
