Letting go is the fundamental requirement for any serious practitioner on the spiritual path. During the , provided profound teachings on how we might truly release the heavy burdens that weigh down our spirits. To begin this transformation, one must first let go of self-views and ego-attachment. We often cling to a rigid sense of who we are, which only serves to create unnecessary suffering. Furthermore, we must let go of the image that others hold of us. We are not defined by the opinions, judgements, or expectations of the world. Finally, we must release the old habits of , personal ego, and selfishness that have defined our past, allowing us to start anew with a clean heart.
By letting go, we can become a person of no-self. This is a state of profound liberation. When you reach this level of practice, you will find that no matter how others perceive you, speak to you, or treat you, your heart remains as steady as a mountain. You will not be moved by external circumstances or the shifting winds of human opinion. Instead, you will maintain a calm demeanour, offering courtesy and respect to everyone you encounter, meeting every situation with a gentle smile. This is the strength that comes from true inner peace.
Why can we remain so calm in the face of adversity? It is because we see the Buddha in every person we meet. When we practise respect for all Buddhas, we treat every individual with the same reverence we would offer to the Enlightened Ones. If you can truly live in this way, you are a true practitioner of the path. You have successfully transformed your life from one of conflict to one of harmony and wisdom. This is the essence of our practice, and it is the way to leave suffering behind and find true happiness.
