The Practice of Constant

Namo Amituofo teaches us that the practice of chanting is not confined to the meditation hall. It is a living, breathing commitment that should accompany every movement of your body. Whether you are walking after a meal, engaging in walking meditation, or performing the sacred act of visualising spiritual deliverance, your heart should remain anchored in the Buddha-name. Even as you walk through your daily life, you may visualise yourself entering the clouds, chanting Namo Amituofo with every step. When you carry the Buddha in your movements, every stride becomes a sacred act. You are not merely walking; you are performing Buddha-actions. This is how you save yourself, and through this same , you help all beings leave suffering behind and find true happiness.

Extending Compassion to All Beings

When you chant while in motion, do not keep this light to yourself. Extend an invitation to all the countless creatures that share this world with you. Invite the earth, the dust, the stones, the clouds, and the very air you breathe to join you in chanting Namo Amituofo. Teach the animals—the cattle, horses, sheep, kangaroos, ants, and insects—to chant. Extend this invitation to all living things, from the smallest crawling creature to the grandest flowers, trees, mountains, and rivers. When you ensure that every thought and every step is filled with the presence of Namo Amituofo, you create a field of light that benefits all of existence.

Integrating the Buddha-Name into Daily Life

You must remember to chant Namo Amituofo in every situation, whether you are travelling, running errands, or shopping in a store. When you are sitting still, let the Buddha-name be the rhythm of your heart. Before you consume a meal, offer ten recitations of the Buddha-name to purify your food. If you are dining out, it is essential to maintain this practice; you may do so through silent recitation, keeping the Buddha-name in your heart even while you eat. By maintaining this continuous flow, you ensure that your heart and actions are always aligned with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.

The Danger of Wandering Thoughts

When you chant, let the Buddha-name flow naturally from your heart and mouth. Listen to the sound of the Buddha-name with your own ears. When your heart, your actions, your speech, and your hearing are all unified in chanting Namo Amituofo, you must simply continue forward without hesitation. Do not allow your mind to wander into idle thoughts. If you allow yourself to think of worldly matters, the Buddha-name will fade, and your heart will become empty. In that moment of emptiness, you become vulnerable to attracting beings to possess , which will cause your physical form to feel heavy and your steps to become sluggish.

Rituals for Protection and Purification

To maintain your spiritual health, please perform ten prostrations to the Buddha before you leave your home, and another ten upon your return. Through these prostrations, you receive the Buddha’s light, which helps to clear away any attached spirits and purifies your body. It is also a vital practice to cleanse yourself after returning from the outside world, washing away the dust and impurities you may have accumulated. By keeping the Buddha-name as a continuous, flowing stream that never stops, you fulfil your duty as a child of the Buddha. This is the path of the practitioner, and it is the way to ensure your heart remains forever in the light of Namo Amituofo.
