The True Identity of Faxian: Beyond the Modern Icon

This is a record of an interview with the spirit of the ancient monk Faxian, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now reflects upon his past, his connection to the modern world, and his path toward spiritual purification. This session was recorded by the chief writer, Venerable Shi Faxi, on February 23, 2018.

Faxian speaks: "I am Faxian, not Ma Yun. I wish to undertake a new mission for the Buddha’s teachings. Namo Amituofo!"

Venerable Faxi: "Faxian, Namo Amituofo."

Faxian speaks: "I am indeed Faxian. This is truly monumental news. In my entire life, I never once entertained such a thought. I only ever fantasised about being a martial arts master; I had a deep passion for watching martial arts films and analysing their techniques. I had no idea that I also shared a profound connection with Namo Amituofo.

Through these recent sessions of purification, the help I have received from my fellow practitioner has truly made me feel so much cooler and more at peace within my heart. I never realised how incredibly comfortable it feels to be free from the heavy, suffocating weight of worldly attachments."

The Path of Purification and Renewal

"My life was severely polluted, and my character had become quite complex. Now, as I undergo this daily process of subduing my ego and purification, I can feel distinct changes occurring within me. If my physical form can successfully awaken and resonate with my spirit, then I will be able to do even more for the Buddha’s teachings.

In the past, I was able to travel to the Western Regions to seek scriptures. In this lifetime, I certainly have the opportunity to turn back and study the Dharma once more. I have confidence in this path, and I have absolute confidence in my fellow practitioner. I have never properly thanked Venerable Changren, who has been helping me from within all this time. Thank you for your assistance. I am Faxian, not Ma Yun. I wish to undertake a new mission for the Buddha’s teachings. Namo Amituofo!"
