During the third session of the held on 21 November 2020, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided essential guidance on the concept of orderliness. This teaching serves as a gentle reminder for all practitioners to examine their daily conduct and the state of their hearts.
When you are within the bodhimanda, you must learn to integrate yourself into the community. You are not an isolated individual acting alone; rather, you are a vital part of a collective effort to reach the of Ultimate Bliss. By harmonising with the group, you learn to set aside the ego and contribute to the shared purpose of the temple.
Tidying up your personal affairs is your own responsibility. It is also a direct reflection of your habits. If you cannot manage your own space or your personal belongings, how can you expect to manage the complexities of your mind? The way you organise your environment is a mirror of your internal state. If your surroundings are chaotic, it is often a sign that your mind is equally unsettled.
Your appearance, your speech, and your every movement are the outward manifestations of your inner state. These are the essential demeanours that every practitioner should possess. Do not underestimate the importance of these details, for they are the foundation upon which your moral character is built. If you find that your conduct is not appropriate, you must take the time to tidy, correct, adjust, and improve your behaviour. You must be cautious and diligent in this, as every action carries weight.
We can see the greatness of a person through how they handle small matters. This is because the heart of each person is different. If your heart is meticulous, you will start by perfecting the small things. When you can handle big tasks with the same attention to detail, we know the true nature of your character. A person who ignores the small details will rarely be able to manage the larger responsibilities of life with wisdom.
The value of an awakened being lies in their ability to handle all matters—whether large or small—with absolute clarity. When your heart is clear, you can bring order to everything you touch. You are able to be comprehensive, ensuring that every aspect is covered and nothing is left in disarray. To complete a task perfectly is, in itself, a manifestation of your skills in practice. Let us strive to bring this orderliness into our daily lives, ensuring that our practice is not just a concept, but a lived reality that reflects the purity of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
