Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers these teachings:
Self-restraint is an indispensable capacity for all Buddhist practitioners, and it is especially vital for those who are dedicated to their practice. How often do we find ourselves suddenly erupting in uncontrollable anger or resentment? Sometimes, these outbursts happen so quickly that we are not even aware of them until someone else points them out to us. When we live in such a state, we are constantly allowing the fire of our anger to burn down the forest of our accumulated merit. This is truly a great pity, for we are squandering the spiritual progress we have worked so hard to build.
Do you find yourself being overly attached to your own personality, your subjective opinions, or your personal viewpoints? Some practitioners even develop a sense that their own knowledge or what they have learned is untouchable and beyond criticism. While such focus might be considered a strength in worldly affairs, it becomes a significant obstacle in the study of the Buddha’s teachings. In the practice of the , one must learn to let go and empty the heart. If you remain stubbornly attached to your own views, you will find it impossible to accept the perspectives of others. Consequently, your learning will be severely limited, and you will struggle to achieve any real breakthrough or spiritual growth.
Are you perhaps ignoring the guidance provided by the Dharma, the , or the sincere counseling of others? When you do not take these teachings to heart, or when you choose to follow your own ideas and methods instead of the right path, you leave yourself vulnerable. The consequences of such negligence are grave: the manifestation of will inevitably surface, leading to difficult situations. Without the protection of a disciplined mind, you become susceptible to spiritual attachment, where external forces may influence your thoughts and actions. You will eventually find it difficult to maintain control over your own life, leading to the onset of old age and illness. Your body may weaken, and your spirit may become scattered, making it difficult to maintain a clear focus on the path to . If these conditions persist, you risk falling into the hells, making it extremely difficult to achieve rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss.
If you recognise any of these tendencies within yourself, do not be discouraged, but do take them seriously. It is time to strengthen your self-restraint and commit to the practice of quickly repent, change their ways. By acknowledging your mistakes and turning back toward the right path, you can continue your journey with renewed clarity and purpose. Let us always remember to keep our hearts focused on the Buddha, for in the light of , we can find the strength to overcome our obstacles and return to our true nature.
