Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
On the twenty-ninth of December, 2023, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered these profound words of guidance regarding the path of the and the urgency of our mission to save all beings.
Those who dedicate their lives to saving beings must always keep the suffering of others at the very centre of their hearts. The vow is simple yet infinite in its scope: where there are beings, there I go. If there are beings in need, I shall go to them. Because beings are present everywhere, I must be present everywhere as well. This is the true spirit of the Bodhisattva—a heart that knows no boundaries and a commitment that never wavers.
How can we best achieve this? The answer lies in the constant practice of chanting the Buddha-name. Whether you are walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, never let the Buddha-name leave your heart. This is the most rapid and convenient method for both saving yourself and saving others. Therefore, you must practise with great diligence to ensure your chanting becomes powerful and focused. When your mind is truly settled and absorbed in the Buddha-name, you will be able to manifest the true utility of this practice at any moment.
By maintaining this constant state of , you allow the meritorious power of the Buddha's name to flow through you. This power acts as a key, helping to open up space for those who are trapped. Many beings are confined by their own karmic obstacles, unable to see the light. Through your sincere practice, you help them break free from these limitations, providing them with the precious opportunity to obtain deliverance. This is not merely a task for a specific time or place; it is a manifestation of the deep affinity that connects us all.
This work of salvation can occur at any time and in any location. It is the result of the combined compassion and Wisdom of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, manifesting in the actual, physical action of saving beings. Where there are beings, there we must go. Beings are present in every moment and every corner of the vastness of the Dharma Realm. Regardless of which of the six realms of existence they inhabit, whether they are found in the depths of the water, in the midst of fire, or in the darkest, most desolate places overgrown with weeds, they are all reachable. Every single one of them can receive the opportunity for salvation and the chance to undergo , provided we are diligent in our practice and unwavering in our vow to save beings.
