Amitabha Buddha's discourse:
"Permanent", for most people, refers to whether things in this lifetime last forever,

Such as wealth, the body, and family members,

When the breath stops, these causal conditions end and never return,

Wealth cannot be taken away, the body is destroyed by burial or cremated,

And the relationship with family members only existed for a time; afterwards, each is reincarnated into different realms,

It can never be as it was in the past,

The past has vanished like smoke, leaving no trace, and people and situations have changed.

However, "permanent" for practitioners refers not only to this lifetime, but to eternity,

Existing forever throughout aeons; it is the spirit, it is the true self / self-nature.

The spirit carries the good and evil karma contained within the Alaya consciousness, reincarnating within the six realms of existence according to karmic conditions and the causes and effects.

Even if transformed, possessing a different body, a different name, a different appearance, a different gender,

Whether in a human body, or in the body of a cat, dog, cow, sheep, pig, or horse.

Although reincarnated and wearing different outer garments of beings, this spirit is unique,

It is all the same spirit, yet it has different appearances.

Moreover, this spirit does not remember the events of the past,

It can only rely on the personality and habits of the being whose outer garment it currently wears,

Recognising itself from birth and learning how to survive.

Because of drinking the water of Meng Po, there is no memory of past lives, forgetting the events of the past;

Yet, it can make the reactions learned in this lifetime based on the environment and the objects encountered.

Therefore, animals will first use their instincts to face their own food, clothing, housing, and transportation,

And when they survive because of this, they live out this life in this way.

If there is the guidance of parents, they will survive according to the behavioural patterns taught by their parents.

When encountering threats or challenges to life and living, they will react with instinct,

To protect their own lives.

Moreover, the closer its space level is to that of humans, the more sensitive and higher the life form is.

For example: the space of ants and the space of cats and dogs are different,

The space level of cats and dogs is higher than that of ants,

Therefore, their spiritual level is closer to the human world, and they often become good friends of people,

They also have their own karmic conditions and the causes and effects.

By the same logic,

Any food that enters the mouth and abdomen has a relationship of karmic conditions and the causes and effects with oneself.

From the past, even from long ago in aeons past until now,

You have eaten me and harmed me, so in this lifetime I eat you; this is retribution.

"Even after a hundred thousand aeons, the karma created does not perish; when causal conditions meet, the retribution is borne by oneself."

"It is not that there is no retribution, but that the time has not yet arrived."

Every bit of what is done has a retribution,

Even after a hundred thousand aeons, when meeting again, the cause and effect (Karma) of good and evil will still manifest.

Karmic retribution is not empty; it is the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way,

It is the truth that exists permanently; one should be cautious in speech and action!
