The Infinite Power of the Buddha-Name

On the tenth of June, 2017, the disciple Shi Faxi sought guidance from the Buddha. He asked, "A single Buddha-name can open up space, a single Buddha-name can perform for sentient beings, and the benefits of a single Buddha-name are boundless. This is because of the energy contained within the Buddha-name. I humbly request the Buddha's compassionate teachings, Namo Amituofo."

Namo Amituofo provided the following discourse:

The energy of the Buddha-name is derived from the cultivation of your heart. The essence of the Buddha-name lies in your ability to visualise. The Buddha-name embodies true virtue and has the power to save infinite beings. A single utterance of the Buddha-name surpasses all mantras and sutras. When you chant the Buddha-name, let it be continuous, like a flowing stream. When your practice reaches a state of perfection, you will attain Buddhahood.

The Obstacles to True Practice

You may ask, "When will I attain Buddhahood?" The answer lies in how you handle your afflictions. If you allow your afflictions to multiply, they will grind down your spirit like a millstone. If you can achieve the state of the Buddha, it is a rare and precious accomplishment. How much more difficult is it, then, to maintain this practice amidst the complex and chaotic affairs of the world? You are often lost in a sea of thousands of wandering thoughts, making it difficult to chant even a single, sincere "Namo Amituofo."

If you are currently feeling unsettled, how can you find peace? Where does peace come from, and how can one remain in a state of constant peace? The benefits of the Buddha-name are rooted in the Ultimate Vows of Namo Amituofo. Whether you chant the four-character or six-character name, each brings its own profound benefit. When you chant with a sincere heart and a pure mind, the results are truly inconceivable. By visualising the vastness of the Buddha's , you can draw in and guide ten thousand sentient beings toward liberation.

The Four Levels of Chanting

There are four levels of chanting, yet they are all Namo Amituofo:

  • Chanting with the Mouth: This is the physical act of reciting the name.
  • Chanting with the Heart: This involves the emotional resonance of your devotion.
  • Chanting with the Mind: This is the state of focused, singular concentration.
  • Chanting with the : This is the deepest level, where the Buddha-name permeates your very awareness.

Though these levels may seem different, they are all Namo Amituofo. If you chant until your throat is sore but your heart is not engaged, it is all in vain. Today, Namo Amituofo guides you to chant this name. The difference lies in your heart, your sincerity, your faith, your vows, and your mind-capacity. It is vital to have great vows and a great mind-capacity. When you visualise the infinite, you embrace the boundless suffering of all beings. By aligning yourself with the Buddha's compassionate vows and the Buddha's compassionate vision, you enter the same state of mind as the Buddha. There is no longer any discrimination; this is the true meaning of Chao Du—to let go of the physical body and realise the .

The Path to True Deliverance

If you only chant the name with your mouth, it is merely the sound of words. You will not see the benefits, and you are simply wasting your breath. If you chant with your heart, you may become emotional, feeling sorrow or tears, but this is merely an expression of human emotion. If you chant with your mind, you are closer to the true Namo Amituofo, but it is difficult to maintain this state consistently. If you chant with your consciousness, you must ask: is your awareness clear and awake, or is it dim and confused? The Buddha-name must be the only thing in your consciousness.

Chanting a single Buddha-name is a form of practice, and it is through this practice that you prove your skills. A single "Namo Amituofo" can lead you directly to the of Ultimate Bliss. It can break through the three periods of time and allow you to be one with the Tathagata's infinite Body. You only need to have true vows. If you follow the Buddha's path and align your vows and actions with the Buddha's, it is easy to achieve success. Why must you endure the hardship of other practices?

The Urgency of

If you only cultivate the external body while the internal spirit remains uncultivated, you will never realise it; you will only be playing hide-and-seek with your own delusions. In this dusty world, how many people are like this? They are merely planting seeds for the lower realms and damaging the spirit of the Buddha's teachings. Chanting the Buddha-name is easy; it is a single Truth that contains all things and can transform everything. It purifies your consciousness, brings peace, relaxes the spirit, and ultimately leads to absolute purity.

The person who chants the Buddha-name becomes gentle, for the Buddha-name itself is gentle and soft. It softens the heart and warms the spirit. The person who chants the Buddha-name is compassionate, possessing a great, resounding compassion that brings peace to the hearts of all sentient beings. When you chant, you realise the emptiness of the physical body and the vastness of the karmic ocean. You understand the importance of making vows and allowing those vows to lead you to deliverance. Chanting is not merely a worldly activity or a simple search for happiness. The magnetic field and energy within the Buddha-name carry the power to shake the very foundations of the Truth.

How you utilise this power depends entirely on your single-mindedness. As mentioned before, chanting with the mind means having only one thought, with no second thought. True Chao Du is found only in chanting Namo Amituofo. This is the true refuge, the way to leave suffering behind, and the path to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. It all depends on the sincerity of your heart. All beings are meant to return to the West; this is the core teaching of the Buddha. If you do not follow this path, how can you escape the cycle of rebirth? Space is filled with sentient and non-sentient beings, and even in the smallest of spaces, spirits reside. By chanting Namo Amituofo, you can break through these spatial barriers. Through the two powers of the Buddha's teachings—your own effort and the Buddha's power—you can achieve the inconceivable. When you are truly sincere, your energy is infinite, because your heart and the Buddha-heart are one.

In truth, achievement lies in the subtle details. You do not need many years; you only need a sudden awakening. You must understand where the spirits in these spaces come from—they are created by your own thoughts, your own consciousness, and your own attachments. The principles of space are a topic for another day. All things have a spirit; this is the absolute Truth. Delivering beings to the West is the true way to save the world. You and I are not separate; we are all of the same body and the same root. Whether in the past or the future, as long as you remain within this cycle, you have not yet escaped. These words are profound, yet they are the Truth. If you are obstructed by your own delusions, you will never reach the West. Because your attachments are so deep, even when the Buddha comes to save you, you resist. The Buddha can only look upon you with compassion, waiting for you to wake up. If you wish to succeed in your practice, you must remember the Buddha and chant the Buddha-name. Make the vow to attain Buddhahood and do not let yourself be trapped in the cycle of rebirth again. The opportunity to be saved does not come at every moment. Now that you have seen these words, you must understand them clearly, cherish this opportunity, and practise with diligence.
