The Karmic Tapestry of Life
When we contemplate the human experience, we must ask ourselves: Why do we arrive in this world, and why must we eventually depart? Each life follows a unique path, whether it is filled with twists and turns, or whether it unfolds as a smooth, straight road. Some lives are marked by great peaks and deep valleys, while others seem to flow with ease. Yet, all of these experiences are governed by the laws of and the causes and effects. Our destiny is not a matter of chance; it is the unfolding of the seeds we have sown in the past. We are simply living out the predetermined course of our own .
When you encounter setbacks or difficulties, it is natural to feel a sense of doubt. You may feel lost, helpless, and uncertain about which direction to take. You might search for a solution, hoping to find a noble person to offer guidance or assistance so that you can face and overcome the obstacles before you. In truth, these very setbacks are also the result of karmic conditions and the causes and effects. Whether you are experiencing or sorrow, reunion or separation, these are all part of a preordained script. They are merely components of this illusory human world. Once that moment has passed, if you do not allow your heart to dwell on the confusion of the past, the present moment becomes a fresh start. Once you realise this, do you not feel a little more awake?
Finding Clarity in the Buddha-Name
If you still feel lost and cannot understand the reason for your suffering, please bring your palms together. With a respectful and clear heart, chant the six-character name: "Namo Amituofo." This single Buddha-name is profound, for it contains the entirety of the Buddha's essence:
- The Buddha’s heartThe Buddha’s powerThe Buddha’s vowsThe Buddha’s
If you chant with a sincere and honest heart, there will be a response. When beings have a sincere connection, the Buddha will surely respond. This interaction is the way of the . The Buddha’s response to you may manifest as a single sentence from a true spiritual friend, or perhaps through the help of those around you. This will lift the fog of confusion, allowing your mind to suddenly open and your wisdom to shine forth. If the path appears in your life, you must seize the opportunity and hold fast to these causal conditions.
The Illusion of the Worldly Realm
Within this Five Turbidities and Evil World, the six realms of rebirth are merely illusory appearances. How can they be a reliable refuge? Even the heavenly beings and the deities of the celestial realms, whose lifespans are vastly extended compared to our own, will eventually reach the end of their time. They, too, are unable to escape the cycle of rebirth. When their lifespan ends, they fall back into the cycle, unable to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. If you seek a place of refuge in this world, you will find it difficult to locate one. The human world is impermanent, like a dream or a fleeting shadow. How can it be a reliable refuge? In the midst of such confusion, how can one become truly awake? The purpose of Buddhist education is to teach everyone how to dissolve this confusion, restore clarity, and learn to become a Buddha. It is a path of walking step by step, learning and practising diligently without ever becoming lazy.
The Path to True Freedom
Those who truly study and practise the Buddha’s teachings can attain clarity, rediscover their true self, and achieve freedom in life and death. While living, they can let go of attachments and find inner coolness. When their worldly conditions come to an end and their life reaches its conclusion, they can be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss with complete ease. This requires dedicated effort and study; it is not something that simply falls from the sky. This is the ultimate goal of Pure Land practice. When one achieves freedom in both life and death, there is no more confusion, no more feeling lost, and no more uncertainty about where to go. From beginning to end, there is only one destination: the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. There is only one practice: chanting the name of Namo Amituofo.
The Union of and
Namo Amituofo has infused infinite Buddha-power and boundless vows into the Buddha-name. For those who chant with Faith, Vows, and Practice, their lives will be filled with energy. This energy allows them to break through confusion and face every present moment with clarity. Once your true self is revealed, the power of your own nature and the power of Namo Amituofo will support one another. You rely on your own strength, and you also rely on the Buddha’s strength. With this, why would you ever worry about lacking a refuge or a moment of clarity? However, before you reach , you must rely entirely on Namo Amituofo during your diligent practice. Only by letting go of the small self can you allow your Buddha-nature to manifest.
Break through the layers of obstacles and the heavy fog of confusion. Attain the clarity of Awakening, and then, through the realisation of your true nature, you will save yourself and save others. You will rescue yourself and be rescued by the Buddha, dissolving all suffering and confusion, and finally be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Let us all encourage one another in this great endeavour.
